Sherman and Dr. John A. Sherman as a founding members of the School of Dental Medicine. Administrative History: Dr. John A. Sherman (1 May 1901-30 Sept. 1982) graduated from the University of Toronto Dental School in 1924. John and Etta (née Taube) (6 Mar. 1908-22 July 1998) Sherman were among the group of dentists and their wives who started Alpha Omega Fraternity in Canada in 1921. Dr. Sherman was an international president of AO, and the founder of the Alpha Omega Foundation of Canada; he also served as its secretary-treasurer for many years. He was an exemplary leader in dentistry across the world and also served the profession as an inventor of dental equipment.; John Sherman died Sept. 30, 1982 and Etta Sherman died July 22, 1998.

The writer seeks assistance for Regina Nisenbbaum, residing in a children's home in Bielsko, Poland. She is looking for her uncles Max Fox, Kalman Nisenbaum, and Aaron Nisenbaum. The writer requests help from Mr. Sherman in finding information about Regina's relatives. File also contains a typed translation.

Scope and Content: Accession consists of clippings, correspondence, invitatations and photographs reflecting the personal life and community contributions of H. Max Swartz. The records include honours, photocopied documents, newsletters, family snapshots and portraits, Swartz's notary public stamp and a small plaque from JIAS in appreciation of Swartz's contribution as president. There are also three scrapbooks containing letters, clippings and photographs.

Custodial History: The records were donated by H. Max Swartz's son Paul.

Administrative History: H. Max Swartz (1900-1989) was born and raised in Toronto, where he worked for decades as a lawyer and was a well-known leader in the community. Swartz studied law at Osgoode Hall and subsequently worked in the law firm of Nathan Phillips for six years and also helped plan Phillips's mayoral campaigns. Swartz was in his early twenties when both his parents died, and he supported his eight younger siblings, an aunt and his grandmother. Eventually he established his own law firm. He was also elected president of the Reading Law Club of the Upper Canada Law Societ (a Jewish law club). Swartz was made a member of the King's Counsel in 1948. He married Seraphine (Serry) Marshack in 1931 and together they had two sons, Paul and Myron.; Swartz's community work started early and never flagged. In 1919, he was one of the founders of the YM-YWHA and he served on its board of directors as president, chairman and then honourary vice president. He was a board member of the United Jewish Welfare Fund and Toronto Jewish Congress, a national executive member of Canadian Jewish Congress, and president of Toronto JIAS (Jewish Immigrant Aid Services) in 1951-1952. In the 1980s, the Jewish Community Centre set up the H. Max Swartz Leadership Development Fund in his honour, and Swartz received a commendation from the mayor of Toronto for his dedication to the preservation of historic buildings, including the Gooderham flatiron building and others in the St. Lawrence Market area of the city. H. Max Swartz died at the age of 88 in 1989.

Admin History/Bio: Max Federman was born 18 September 1902, in Poland, the son of Issie and Hinda Federman. His father moved to Canada in 1911, but it wasn't until he finished his education in Germany in 1920 that Max joined his family in Toronto. He later married Evelyn (née Raisberg) and had one child, Lillian (Skopit).; A union leader, Labour Zionist, and ardent anti-Communist, Federman was the manager of the Fur Workers Union of Toronto, Locals 82 and 68. He was involved in a twenty-year battle with the Communist leadership of the International Fur and Leather Union, until they disbanded and merged with the International Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union. He then became a member of the board of the Fur and Leather Department, International Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union. He was an executive of the Toronto District Trades and Labour Council and the Trade Union Committee and an active leader in the CCF and, later, the New Democratic Party.; Federman was involved with many Jewish community organizations and held several positions such as board member of Histadrut; board member of the Jewish Labour Committee; board member of the Borochov School; chairman of the Achdut Avodah Poale Zion in Toronto and actively involved with the State of Israel Bonds. In 1948, he was instrumental in bringing to Canada over 500 furriers and their families from displaced persons camps in Germany, Austria and Italy.; Federman died on 8 August 1991 at the age of eighty-eight.

Scope and Content: Accession consists of textual and graphic material documenting the activities of Max Skuy. Included are photocopies of short stories and poems written by Max and photographs of Max and Glenda's wedding, portraits of Max and his family, Max at the closing of the synagogue in Vryheid, and the window displays at Max's pharmacy in South Africa.

Administrative History: Max Skuy was born in Karsava, Latvia in 1929 to Benjamin and Chana (nee Cilevitz) Skuy. In 1930, Max and his mother immigrated to Vryheid, South Africa. They joined Max's father who was already living there. Max is the oldest of three children. His siblings are Percy (b. 1932) and Rita (b. 1942). Max married Glenda Silverstone in 1961. They had three children together. Max owned his own pharmacy in Durban called Check Pharmacy.; Max and Glenda immigrated to Toronto soon after Max's mother passed away in 1985. Max's children and brother Percy had already immigrated here. Max found work managing a furniture store in Richmond Hill. He is a member of a short story club and regularly submits stories and poems to the SAJAC News for publication.

Scope and Content: Accession consists of four typed speeches delivered by Max Federman related to labour issues and a photocopy of a Toronto Star article on Max Federman (furriers union) and Ross Russell (United Electrical Workers), communism, labour day parade participation and workers issues.

Administrative History: Max Federman was born 18 September 1902, in Poland, the son of Issie and Hinda Federman. His father moved to Canada in 1911, but it wasn't until he finished his education in Germany in 1920 that Max joined his family in Toronto. He later married Evelyn (née Raisberg) and had one child, Lillian (Skopit). A union leader, Labour Zionist and ardent anti-Communist, Federman was the manager of the Fur Workers Union of Toronto, Local 82 and Local 68. He was involved in a twenty-year battle with the Communist leadership of the International Fur and Leather Union, until they disbanded and merged with the International Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union. He then became a member of the Board of the Fur and Leather Department, International Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union. He was an executive of the Toronto District Trades and Labour Council and the Trade Union Committee, and an active leader in the CCF, and later, the New Democratic Party. Federman was involved with many Jewish community organizations and held several positions such as board member of Histadrut; board member of the Jewish Labour Committee; board member of the Borochov School; chairman of the Achdut Avodah Poale Zion in Toronto and actively involved with the State of Israel Bonds. In 1948, he was instrumental in bringing to Canada over 500 furriers and their families from displaced persons camps in Germany, Austria and Italy. Federman died on 8 August 1991, at the age of 88.

Admin History/Bio: Max Shecter was born on July 7, 1923 to Joseph and Helen Shecter. He was married to Florence Fox and they had three children named: Trudy, Debbie and Barry. Max Shecter was the Secretary -Treasurer for Toronto Bedding Company Limited. He was an active member of the Toronto Jewish Community and was affiliated with the following organizations: Beth Sholom Congregation, United Synagogues of America, B'nai B'rith, Israel Bond Organization, Joint Community Relations Committee, Canadian Jewish Congress, Zionist Organization of Canada and United Jewish Appeal's Furniture division.; Max Shecter was honoured with a Beth Sholom Israel Bond Dinner for dedicated leadership and by Upper Canada Lodge, B'nai B'rith in 1959.
