- Edward Elisha Gelber (1903–1970) was born on 16 November 1903 in Toronto. His parents were Moses Gelber and Sophie Gelber. Eddie married Anna David (m. Gelber), who later became a prominent obstetrician. Eddie and Anna had three children, Edna, Lynn, and David. Eddie died in Jerusalem in 1970.
- Eddie received his BA from the University of Toronto in 1925 and his MA from Columbia University in 1929. He was also a graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, where he earned his master's degree in Hebrew literature. He was admitted to the Ontario bar, Osgoode Hall, in 1934 and the Palestine bar in 1937. A prominent communal worker, Eddie acted as president of the Zionist Council of Canada, president of the Hebrew Schools of Toronto, president of the Toronto Jewish Welfare Fund, and honourary vice-president of the Canadian Jewish Congress during his lifetime.

- Dr. Anna (nee David) Gelber (1907-2007) was born in Palestine in 1907 and passed away November 20th, 2007. Anna received her Doctor of Science from Sorbonne Univeristy in Paris, France and her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Toronto. An obstetrician, at one point she worked in the Medical Department of Toronto's Women's College Hospital. Anna was also a prominent communal worker, active as a member of the National Executive Board of the Canadian Hadassah. Anna married Eddie Gelber, a prominent communal worker. They had three children, Edna, Lynn and David. She and Eddie travelled significantly between Israel and Toronto during their marriage.

- Accession consists of one ceremonial bronze key to the Brusnwick Ave. Talmud Torah (Toronto Hebrew Free School) presented to Moses Gelber in 1925.
- Custodial History
- The key was discovered in the former Israeli home of Moses Gelber's son and daughter-in-law Edward E. and Anna Gelber. Sheila Lemonsky purchased the home and all its contents and kept the key for many years before sending it to friends Esme and Elly Gotz in Toronto, who in turn donated it to the OJA.
- Administrative History
- Moses Gelber (1876-1940) was a businessman and a prominent member of Toronto’s Jewish community in the early 1900s. He was born in Brzezany, Galicia on October 1, 1876 to Nathan Gelber and Rosie Altman. In 1894, he immigrated to Toronto where he and his brother, Louis Gelber, opened a clothing business. After operating this business for twenty-five years, Moses and Louis entered the woolen industry. Their company, Gelber Bros. Ltd., was located on 217 Richmond St. West. In 1901, Moses married Sophie Sparber (1882-1907) and together they had two sons; Israel Gelber (1902-1913) and Edward E. Gelber (1903-1970). In 1907 Sophie gave birth to a stillborn baby and passed away a few days later from an infection related to the birth. Moses was remarried later that year to Sophie Gradinger (1879-1953) of Montreal. They lived in Toronto on 483 Huron St. Moses was involved in many philanthropic and charitable activities. For instance, during the First World War he helped raise funds for Jewish people afflicted by the war in Europe, and was vice-president of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies. Moses also had close ties to Canada’s Zionist movement and was vice-president of the Dominion Organization, president of the Central Division of Ontario, and president of Toronto’s Zionist Council. Moses was active in many other Jewish community organizations. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the University Avenue Synagogue and president of the Talmud Torah and YMHA on Brunswick Avenue. He was also a member of B’nai Zion, IOBB, and the Primrose Club of Toronto. When the Canadian Jewish Congress was formed in 1919, Moses was elected as one of its founding delegates.

- The Eddy Edwards Show was a half-hour CBC radio program that ran on Monday nights at 8:30. The cast included Eddy Edwards and Bert MacKay. Music was by Ronald Morgan and the songs were by Georgia Hall. It is possible that Jackie Rae, Canadian singer-songwriter and head of CBC radio and TV variety from 1952 to 1956, was the producer and that Henry Karpus was involved in the script-writing.

- Edwin "Eddy" Alan Goodman was born to David Bertram and Dorothy Soble on October 11, 1918. He married Suzanne Dorothy Gross and they had two children named Joanne Ruth and Diane Selena.
- He was a barrister and solicitor with Goodman and Goodman along with his father, who was also a prominent barrister. Eddy Goodman was an active leader within the Jewish community. His accomplishments include: Past President of the National Ballet Company; Vice-President of the Progressive Conservative Association of Canada; Past President of University College at the University of Toronto; honorary counsel for United Jewish Welfare Fund; Past President of Toronto Chapter, Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University; Director YM-YWHA; and Director, New Mount Sinai Hospital. In 1987, Edwin Goodman was the honourary guest at the Negev Dinner held at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto.

- Mordecai Gelber (1867–1930) was the older brother of Moses Gelber and Louis Gelber, who were prominent members of the Toronto Jewish community. He immigrated to Canada from Galicia, Austria in 1920 with his children Isaac, Rosa, and Abraham. Mordecai’s first wife, Beulah Rotenberg, passed away before he and the children came to Canada. In 1921, he was married to L. Kleinman. Mordecai was a retail grocer at 45 Grange in Toronto. He and his family belonged to the Kiever Shul. Mordecai passed away on 25 April 25 1930 from pulmonary tuberculosis.

- Edward Elisha Gelber (1903-1970), known as Eddie, was a lawyer who practiced in both Toronto and Jerusalem. He was born in Toronto in 1903 to Moses and Sophie Gelber. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Toronto in 1925, his Master of Arts at Columbia University in 1929, his Master of Hebrew Literature at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, and was admitted to the Ontario Bar at Osgoode Hall in 1934, and the Palestine Bar in 1937. He married Anna David, a doctor, and they had three children named Edna, Lynn and David.
- Edward was very active within the Jewish community, both here and in Israel. He held positions in several Jewish organizations, including president of the Zionist Council of Canada, president of Toronto's United Jewish Welfare Fund, honourary vice-president of the Canadian Jewish Congress, and many others. His wife, Anna, was a member of the National Executive Board of Canadian Hadassah.
- Edward and his family alternated between residences in Canada and Israel for many years. He died in Jerusalem in 1970.

- The fonds consists of records created and accumulated by Edward Gelber. The records pertain to his personal life, his professional work as a lawyer, and finally, his involvement with several Jewish organizations, including the Zionist Organization of Canada, Hebrew Schools of Toronto, Canadian Jewish Congress, and Hadassah. These records include correspondence, professional notes, newsletters, memoranda, meeting minutes, bulletins, invitations and financial records.

- Biography
- Arthur Gelber was born on 22 June 1915 in Toronto. He was educated at Upper Canada College. He married Esther Salomon and had four daughters. Arthur was actively involved in Jewish and general community activity. Among his accomplishments, Arthur served as chair of the National Arts Centre Corporation, chair of the Advisory Council Ontario Cabinet, past president of the Canadian Conference of the Arts, past president of the National Ballet, Board of Directors of the American Council for the Arts, Ballet Opera House, National Ballet, Stratford Festival, life director of the National Theatre School of Canada, governor of National Theatre School of Canada, former honorary chair of the Performing Arts Development Fund, and former governor of York University, trustee of the AGO, decorated with the Order of Canada, recipient of the Centennial medal in 1967, Diploma D’honneur 1978, Queen’s Jubilee Medal, vice-president of America-Israel Cultural Foundation, executive of Canadian Jewish Congress, president of Toronto Zionist Council, president of United Jewish Welfare Fund, second chair of the UJA in 1949, chair of the United Jewish Relief Agency, and chair of the United Jewish Appeal.

Although selling woolens was their main business, the brothers had other investments, including ownership of a service station at Simcoe and Richmond and a public garage at 287 Spadina Avenue.

- Biography
- Hana Gelber (née David) was born in Safed (Tzfat), Palestine in 1907. She studied sciences at the University of Paris-Sorbonne and prepared her thesis at Hebrew University. She graduated from University of Paris-Sorbonne in 1929. Hana moved to Toronto in December 1929 and married Eddie Gelber in March 1930. Hana and Eddie moved to New York where Eddie was completing his final year at the Jewish Theological Seminary and Hana conducted research at the Rockefeller Institute. They returned to Toronto in July 1930. Hana graduated from Medical School at the University of Toronto in 1934. She completed her medical internship in Palestine. Hana and Eddie lived in Palestine from 1934 to 1939. They returned to Toronto in 1939 where they remained until 1954 at which time they made aliyah. Hana worked at Women's College Hospital until 1954. Hana had three children: Edna, Lynn, and David.
