Scope and Content

Accession consists of two letters written to his family while he was overseas serving in the Royal Air force during the Second World War. One describes celebrating Rosh Hashanah in South Africa, and the other exploring Palestine (including several kibbutz settlements) while on active service in Egypt. As well there is a biography of William printed on a card and sent to contributors who planted trees in Canada Park in Israel in his memory.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of photographs documenting the Gryfe, Silverman, Saul and Greenberg families. The majority of the images are family portraits, however, also included is a school photograph of Sandy Greenberg at Charles G. Fraser School in Toronto, a photograph of Feda and Izzy Greenberg in Ottawa, a photograph of the Silverman family at Crystal Beach, and a photograph of a family celebration for Morris Silverman's birthday. Also identified in the photographs are: Sam Silverman, Bill Gryfe, Esther (Gryfe) Silverman, Lizzie Gryfe, Bayla Gryfe, Fae Silverman, Tillie Silverman, Sam Silverman, Bertha Silverman, Sam Saul, Joseph Saul, Ida Saul, Anna Saul, Rachel Saul, Nancy Silverman, Ruth Silverman, Lou Weitzman, and Ruth Weitzman.

Administrative History

Izzy Greenberg and Anna (nee Nathan) Greenberg immigrated to Ottawa from Romania around 1910. They had six children together: Freda, Harry, Joe, Anne, Helen, and Earl (b. 1920). Izzy likely worked as a peddler. When Anna passed away in 1923 all of the children, except for Freda, were sent to a Jewish orphanage in Montreal (the Montefiore orphanage). The orphanage closed in 1936 when Earl was 16 years old. He came to Toronto where he met Sandy (or Sylvia) Silverman. They were married in 1947. Earl initially worked as a shoe salesman, but later opened his own business, Sanmarcoda, where he bought and sold electronic surplus. He and Sandy had three children together: Marsha, Corey, and David. Sandy worked as a secretary with the provincial government and sold baby's clothing at flea markets on Sundays.

Joseph and Anna Saul came to Canada from Romania in the early 1900s. They had six children together: Sam (b. 1908), Rachel (Rae, b. 1910), Ida, Jeanette, Bonnie, and Dorothy. Joseph abandoned the family around 1923 and travelled to California to become an actor. Although his family never heard from him again, they later recognized him in movies under the name Maurice Samuels. Anna was deaf and mute and worked as a seamstress, making ladies clothing out of her own home. Rae obtained work in a hat factory when she was 13 years old and continued in this trade throughout the remainder of her life. Around 1950 she opened her own hat store at Eglinton and Dufferin called Rae's Hats. She briefly lived above the store with her husband, Sam Silverman.

Morris Silverman, Esther (Gryfe) Silverman, and their two daughters Fae and Tillie immigrated to Hamilton from Romania in 1907. Esther's sister, Lizzie Gryfe, was already living in Hamilton at the time. In 1909, Morris and Esther had another son together, Sam. By 1922, the family had moved to Nassau Street in Toronto where Morris worked as a tailor for Tip Top Tailors. They lived next door to the Saul Family. Sam married Rae Saul in 1927. Sam had had various jobs throughout his life including, cab driver, venetian blind salesman, and driver for a cleaner's.

It includes: a YWHA ladies' basketball team card from 1925, originally issued by the Dominion Chocolate Company and featuring Bobbie Rosenfeld; the constitution for the Grand Order of Israel Benefit Society; a postcard of the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care; a postcard of University Avenue in Toronto; and eight invitations to meetings held by Hadassah, the Hebrew Weston Sanatorium Club, the Toronto Hebrew Free School, Mount Sinai Hospital, and the Cloakmakers' Union

Harvey Frankel is a real estate agent for Royal LePage. He is an avid collector of Judaica who donated this material to the OJA.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of records related to the military career of Corporal Tamar Freeman, particularly her 6-month deployment to Kandahar, Afghanistan. Included is postcard and email correspondence sent to her parents detailing issues of camp life, her religious observance, as well as her role as a medic; a DVD of the film "Sisters in Arms" written and directed by Tamar's sister, Beth Freeman; newspaper clippings and articles on Tamar and the film "Sisters in Arms"; photographs of Tamar receiving an award from the Canadian Jewish Congress, of her family greeting her at the airport upon return to Canada, a portrait of Tamar with another soldier and General Hillier, as well as images taken of fellow soldiers and the surroundings while in Afghanistan.

Administrative History

Corporal Tamar Freeman (1967-) is the daughter of Harvey and Gilda Freeman. She began her military career as an army reservist in 1990. As a reservist, she committed one day per week and one weekend per month to working in hospitals on board ships and in defence research facilities. In 2006, she joined the regular infantry as a medic in the Second Field Ambulance unit. She served in Kandahar for 6 months between 2006 and 2007 as a medic treating wounded soldiers, Afghan allies and civilians. She also served as part of the Provincial Reconstruction Team at a village medical clinic. She received the Alan Rose Award for International Human Dignity from the Canadian Jewish Congress in 2007. Corporal Freeman is currently stationed at Base Borden in Ontario.

Accession consists of material documenting members of Harvey Freeman's family, several of whom served in the armed forces. Included are: family photographs, a Krugel family tree, a copy of Itzik Kriegel (Harvey's grandfather)'s army discharge, an attestation paper for Louis Krugel (Harvey's uncle), a signed program for a "stag whoopee dinner and night of blissful freedom" in honour of Lou Krugel's approaching marriage, and printed images of Harvey's daughter Tamar Freeman in Afghanistan. One of the photographs depicts Louis Krugel with professional wrestler and actor Tor Johnson, aka the Swedish Angel.

Administrative History

Harvey Freeman was born on May 22, 1928. As a youth, he attended Harbord Collegiate and went on to join the militia, where he was the lone Canadian Jewish bagpiper.

Harvey made his living in business, working in different areas including furniture manufacturing and property management. As part of a change in lifestyle, he took up marathons in his early seventies.

Harvey has four children.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of audiovisual materials and textual records related to the film and television career of Harvey Atkin. The records are primarily VHS and U-matic tapes of his various performances on television series, commercials, and films, as well as interviews. Also included are news clippings featuring reviews of Atkin’s work, interviews, and biographical sketches. As well, there are promotional materials for Meatballs and Pet Peeves, and several photographs of Atkin.

Custodial History

The records were gathered together by Celia Atkin for a retrospective of Harvey's career in 2018 by the Toronto Jewish Film Festival. Stuart Hands then put Celia in touch with the OJA as a repository for donation.

Administrative History

Elliot Harvey Atkin (1942-2017) was born and lived his entire life in Toronto. He was the son of Ida and Murray Atkin, and his grandparents had immigrated to Canada from Russia in the early twentieth century. After high school he joined his father’s construction business, and in 1963 married Celia Tessler. The couple raised two children, Lisa Atkin and Danny Atkin.

In 1969, he joined friend Larry Goldhar’s talent agency, The Character’s Talent Agency, as a partner and in the 1970s began featuring in Canadian television shows and American movies filmed in Toronto. Following breakout success in the 1979 comedy Meatballs, Atkin had a prolific career in television and voice work. He continued to live in Toronto throughout his career, flying to the US to film series such as Cagney and Lacey in the 1980s and Law & Order: SVU in the 2000s. He was also a voice performer who contributed to a number of animated television series, as well as an estimated 3,000 television and radio commercials. Larry Goldhar remained Atkin’s agent throughout his career.

In addition to his facility with languages and accents, he was known for his mechanical abilities, and hosted a handyman feature, “Help Yourself,” on CTV.

Atkin never fully retired, and passed in 2017 from cancer. In 2018, the Toronto Jewish Film Festival presented an archival screening series in his honour, The Harvey Atkin Tribute to Canadian Media.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of material documenting Harvey Freeman. Included are seven photographs (both black and white and colour) and a small number of textual records.

The first photograph, possibly taken in the 1940s, shows the workers of the Model Fur Co., which was located on Adelaide Street West; Morris Freeman is shown in the front centre. The second photograph, possibly taken in the 1960s, shows Max Schecter, Lord Samuel, Harvey Freeman, and Phil Givens at the mayor's office. The third photograph is a group portrait, taken in 1914, of Morris Freeman and other members of the military arsenal in Austria. The fourth photograph, date unknown, shows Harvey Freeman with a bag pipe. The fifth photograph is a family portrait in which the following individuals are identified: Abe Brown, Leah Brown, Rose Brown, Sidney Brown, Morris Freeman, Abe Golden, Fradel Goldman, and Sam Golden. The sixth photograph, taken in 1948, shows F/Sgt. Harvey Freeman at Camp Borden. The seventh photograph, taken in 1996, shows Harvey Freeman with bagpipes at the opening of Darchei Noam's new chapel.

Also included are newspaper clippings; meeting minutes of the 63rd Semi-Annual Conference of the Eastern Canadian Council, B'nai Brith, which was held in Ottawa, Ontario, in November 1955; volume 1, number 4 of the Sheaf. Annotated on the October 1943 issue of the Sheaf, published by the employees of Canadian Breweries Limited, is the following: “uncle Lou’s picture here on page 9.” Annotation refers to a photograph of Lou Krugel selling victory bonds in 1916 from the steps of Toronto’s city hall.

David Greenberg was an electrical engineer. He later became a chiropracter in Toronto. His father, Louis Greenberg, was a tailor whose shop was located in the Jarvis and Parliament area on Queen Street East. The family originally belonged to the Berkeley Street Synagogue, but there was no minyan for David's bar mitzvah and they moved to the McCaul Street Synagogue.

Scope and Content

The records include three medals that were awarded to Private Samuel Sterin (J-5639) by the British government for his service during the First World War. They include the British War Medal, the Victory Medal and the Service at the Front Medal.

The accession also consists of 32 photographs documenting the family of the donor. This includes the following families: Sterin, Coldofsky, Horowitz, Chaplin and Novak.

Custodial History

The records belonged to Sarah Sterin Harvey, who is in a home for the aged in Arizona. Since she doesn't have any family left, Sarah entrusted her family treasures to her friend Molly Rose who passed them on to the OJA.

Administrative History

The Sterin family came from Kiev Russia to Canada during the 1880s. The first arrivals were two brothers Abe and Sam (b. 1886). Abe was a furrier who married Jenny. Sam, who became an upholsterer, married Leah Horowitz and they had two children: Sarah (m. Harvey), who was born in 1927, and Morris (Maurice). Maurice served in the Canadian military during the Second World War. Sarah married James Harvey in Los Angeles in 1972. Neither of the siblings had children. Maurice currently lives in Las Vegas.

The Horowitz family came from Palestine to Toronto during the 1920s. Leah's sister Rose married Percy and they had two children. Eva Horowitz married David Novak and they had one daughter, Honey.

Jack Sterin (b. 1890) was another brother who settled in the United States. He served in the United States military during World War One and became a musician. He played the cello for the Philadelphia Orchestra and died at the age of 43.

His sister Simi Sterin married Sam Coldofsky, who was a barber. He ran the Model Barber Shop at 336 Spadina Avenue. They had three children: Sarah (m. Dacks), Arthur (who changed his name to Coldoff) and David. Arthur (b. 1913) fought during the First World War and was killed in Pontecorvo, Italy on 2 May 1944. His brother David became a musician.

Jack's other sister was Rose Chaplin. She was married to Meyer Chaplin. He worked as a furrier in Toronto. They had nine children: Harold, Charles, Irwin, Norman, Lil, Joan, Sarah, Ruth and Dorothy. Dorothy was institutionalized as a child. Ruth, who was a twin with Norman, passed away at a young age. Lil married Ben and they had 3 girls: Helen, Karen and Nora who were born in the 1940s.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of a scrapbook documenting the Yedidot Chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women and a photo album documenting programming of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Canada (Toronto). The Scrapbook includes photographs, invitations and notes, programmes and other related ephemera. The album includes photographs documenting the Summer Seminar on Jewish Genealogy held in Toronto on June 27-30, 1993 at the Park Plaza Hotel.

The Yedidot Chapter was formed in 1977. Scope and Content

The series consists of newsletters and bulletins published by the BJE as part of its outreach and promotional activities. The intended audiences for these publications were parents, teachers at affiliated schools, and school principals and administrators. The newsletters for teachers are "Likutim : a bulletin for teachers" (1951-1955; in Hebrew and English), and "Teachers' bulletin" (1957-1959). Likutim was intended primarily to keep teachers informed of new developments in pedagogy. Teachers' bulletin contains information on the BJE, its programs and services.

A newsletter specifically aimed at parents was initially titled "Our children" (1954), and then "Home and school" (1954-1963). This newsletter contained articles on Jewish holidays and other aspects of Judaism, news articles on the BJE and Jewish education, and articles on how parents could encourage and be involved in their children's education.

In the 1970s, the BJE published the "Board of Jewish Education newsletter," which contains short articles on current events relating to the BJE and Jewish education, and the services and activities of the BJE.

Admin History/Bio

David Greenberg was an electrical engineer, who married at the age of nineteen. He later became a chiropracter in Toronto. His father, Louis Greenberg, was a tailor whose shop was located in the Jarvis and Parliament area on Queen Street East. The family originally belonged to the Berkeley Street Synagogue, but there was no minyan for David's bar mitzvah and they moved to the McCaul Street Synagogue. David's stepmother's name was Sadie.

Scope and Content

Item is a portrait of David Greenberg, his father Louis Greenberg and his stepmother Sadie. The picture was taken for David's bar mitzvah on October 13, 1935.
