This accession consists of one copy photograph and negative taken at the official opening of the Hebrew Men of England Synagogue on Spadina Avenue. The photograph is shows the group dressed in top hats and tails in front of the entrance to the shul. The photograph was taken before the official portrait and thus there is movement and an air of relaxation amongst the subject. The accession record states that this photograph was taken by the donor as he was passing by the shul and saw everyone assembled for the official portrait.

Ben Steinberg was born in Winnipeg, Canada, and was educated at Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of Toronto. He is well known across Canada and the U.S. for his lecture-recitals on Jewish music history and style, and has conducted and lectured overseas in such places as Israel, Hong Kong, Australia and Japan.
A professional composer of both sacred and secular music, he is perhaps the most widely commissioned composer of Jewish music worldwide. His works have been published in the U.S., Canada and Israel.
Ben has served as director of music at Temple Sinai since 1970, and was appointed composer-in-residence in 1996. The University of Calgary (Alberta) Special Collections currently houses his original manuscripts, scores and papers.

Accession consists of the first recording by the Jewish Folk Choir. Included in the record set are two of three Jewish Folk Choir disc recordings. These recordings were conducted by Emil Gartner and produced by Torch Record Company, 687 Bay Street, Toronto, Canada.
Disc 1 side A, "Smol Y'min", (Left, Right!), Song of the Haganah. Disc 1, side B, Reb Dovidl - Humoresque" Jewish Folksong arranged by Zilberts.
Disc 2, side A "Biro-Bidjaner Freilechs", Song of Joy (Text: Feffer, Music:Polansky). Disc 2, side B, "Palestinian Nights", Shirley Newman, Soprano.
The inside front cover provides a historical sketch of Toronto's Jewish Folk Choir and conductor Emil Gartner.
The inside back cover lists lyrics to songs in Yiddish with English translations. The songs listed include "Songs of the Blacksmith," "No! No! Our People Shall Never Perish," "Reb Dovidl--Humoresque," "Smol Y'min," "Biro-Bidjaner Freilechs" and "Palestinian Nights."
In addition, there is a vinyl recording produced by Banner Records Inc. featuring Molly Picon, accompanied by Abe Ellstein and Orchestra. Side A, "Pinky's in a Pickle", side B "Die Veldt is a Theatre."

Weisser (Pilderwasser) and Cantor Samuel Kavetzky (Bedrokowetzky) from 1919. The accession also includes handwritten drafts of music scores by an unknown author, possibly Elie Spivak.

Accession consists of material documenting Cantor Harold Klein. Included are audio recordings that belonged to Klein, sheet music, and other textual records.
Administrative History
Cantor Harold Klein was born in Borough Park, Brooklyn in 1929. The child of eastern European immigrants, Klein was the second of three sons. When he was four, the family moved to Williamsburg. It was there that he attended yeshiva.
As a child, Klein was inspired by Rabbi Levi Greenwald, Rabbi Dovid Rabinowitz, and Earl Spero to pursue his vocation as a cantor. He studied with Cantor Noah Schall and [Frederick?] Pugel. In a 1984 interview with author Mark Slobin, Klein credited both with his later success.
In the course of his career, Klein sung for several congregations. The first was Sutton Place Synagogue, aka the U.N. Synagogue, where he introduced congregational singing. In 1968, he moved to Toronto and became cantor at Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda Synagogue. After several years at Beth Emeth, he went to Shaarei Shomayim, where he sung for many years.
In addition to regular singing, Klein occupied a number of important posts within the cantorial community. In the 1970s, he was elected to the executive council of the Cantors Assembly of America. At the time he was elected, Klein was serving as the president of the Toronto Council of Hazzanim.
Klein was also a published author. After a friend encouraged him to write a songbook, he formed Mydas Music Company, which published his Let's Sing and Daven songbook in 1985. The songbook, which was accompanied by a ninety-minute cassette of Klein singing to piano accompaniment, won praise from a number of cantors. A sequel, Let's Sing and Celebrate,was released in 1987.
In 1988, the Cantors Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary inducted Klein as one of its honourary fellows.

Accession consists of records related to the planning and production of a centenary journal and dinner in honour of the 100th anniversary of The Beth Jacob V’anshe Drildz Congregation. Included are submissions for the journal including a detailed history of the Beth Jacob Synagogue, print proofs of the journal, congratulatory letters from politicians and Jewish organizations and congratulatory ads. In addition there are copies of speeches from the dinner held on June 26, 1997, a sample of the invitation and general planning correspondence.
Photographs taken for the journal feature exterior shots of the Beth Jacob Synagogue on Henry St and Wilmington and interior shots of the Bimah, Aron ha-kodesh, stained glass windows, sanctuary from the Wilmington Street location along with clergy, members of the sisterhood and brotherhood, presidents and others involved in the synagogue.
Administrative History
Beth Jacob congregation was founded in 1897 and was located in three different locations in St. John’s Ward before the land at 23 Henry Street was purchased in 1919. Known as the Henry Street Shul or the Polishe Shul, the new purpose-built synagogue was dedicated in 1922. The dedication ceremonies attracted so many onlookers that the police had to be called in to manage the crowds.
The synagogue could accommodate up to 800 worshippers – 500 in the men’s section and 300 in the women’s balcony. According to Orthodox tradition, men and women sit separately during synagogue services. Its neo-Romanesque design was typical of other North American synagogues of the period that borrowed heavily from church architecture, often featured arched entranceways, rose windows and twin towers. Its vaulted ceiling was capped by a massive central dome and four smaller ones. It boasted a mikvah (ritual bath) in its basement as well as an assembly hall, a smaller chapel, a brick sukkah and a caretaker’s apartment. The synagogue’s intricately carved Aron ha-kodesh and Bimah were also designed by Brown and were removed in the mid 1960s when the congregation relocated to its current location in North York. The building was sold and converted into the Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church.
Benjamin Brown considered Beth Jacob Synagogue to be his crowning achievement. It was the first synagogue in Toronto (perhaps Canada) to be designed by a Jewish architect and signified the Jewish community’s increased confidence in its new generation of emerging professionals.

Cantor Nathan Stolnitz was born in Vilna. He settled in Toronto in 1926. He founded the Ontario Cantors Association and was involved with Yivo, the Canada Jewish Congress, and Toronto's Jewish Public Library. He was also an author. Cantor Stolnitz died on 11 March 1969 while vacationing in Miami Beach. He was seventy-seven.

Accession consists of programs for music concerts in Toronto including a childrens' Yiddish concert at Farband Folk Shule (1928), the Toronto Centennial Public and High School Concert (1934), the Jewish National Choir "Hazamir" (1939-1941), Hashomer Hatzair Ninth Annual Concert (1940), The Toronto Star Good Music Concert (1955) and a concert at Beth Tikvah Synagogue (1974).
