Admin History/Bio

Noted brothers, Nat and Lou Turofsky, began taking photos in 1907. They photographed wedding banquets, social and public events, and celebrities, but were mostly known for their sports photography and quickly established themselves as the premier photographers in the sporting world. Their diverse hockey photographs truly captured the essence of the game, all of which chronicled the Original Six era.

Lou Turofsky was born in 1892 in Chicago to Russian immigrant parents. The family moved to Toronto in 1900, and Lou began work as a photographer at Alexandra Studios in 1907. In 1910, he bought the business and in 1911, he hired his brother Nat to work with him. While Nat never married, Lou married Ruth Seigel in 1936, at the age of forty-five, and had two daughters, Carol (m. Grafstein) and Riki, who is now an opera singer.

Nat and Lou Turofsky were perhaps the most famous sports photographers of the 1940s and 1950s, due in part to their contract as the official photographers of Maple Leaf Gardens from the 1930s until the mid-1950s. They also photographed baseball games for the Toronto Maple Leaf baseball club.

Nat and Lou Turofsky died in 1956 and 1959 respectively.

Scope and Content

This series consists of eighteen photographs taken by the Turofsky brothers from the late 1940s up until 1974. The photographs depict members of the sports community in Toronto, including athletes, managers, newscasters, and reporters, as well as international athletes and celebrities such as Herb Elliot, Danny Kaye, Phil Silvers, and Liberace. Many of the photographs feature Spencer "Spiff" Evans, who was the publicity chief for the Maple Leaf Gardens during the 1940s and 1950s and, in 1963, became the director of public relations for the Toronto Maple Leafs baseball club.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of Negev Dinner negatives for the years of 1969, 1975-1977, and 1979-2006. Also included are several presentation pieces comprised of portraits that Gilbert took for presidents and prime ministers of Israel and Israeli Prime Ministerial postage stamps produced from those portraits. Some of the presentation pieces are accompanied by thank-you letters address to Gilbert and signatures of Gilbert and presidents and prime ministers of Israel being featured. Accession also includes six portraits featuring Robert Sterling, Elliotte Friedman’s grandmother, [Sydney Sugarman?], and one unidentified person; two unidentified group photographs; one unidentified wedding photograph; and one photograph depicting Al Gilbert at an event. Also included is an oversized group photograph of Greenfild’s Jewish Radio Hour of CKOC featuring Max Mandel and his colleagues.

Administrative History

Nachman (Nathan) Gittelmacher was born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1898 to Shloima and Mattie Gittelmacher. Suffering terribly during the pogroms of 1918 and 1920, he fled from place to place and then emigrated to Canada in 1921. Trained as a photographer in Europe, he opened his own photography studio in Toronto in 1922, called Elite Studios. First located at 513 Queen Street West, he soon moved to 615 Queen Street West. Nathan serviced a largely Jewish clientele, photographing weddings, bar mitzvahs, and Jewish community events. Nathan was married to Nina Sokoloff and had three sons and a daughter: Louis (Lou), Albert (Al), Jack, and Ruth. During the early 1940s, the family legally changed their name from Gittelmacher to Gilbert and subsequently altered the name of the business to Gilbert Studios. When Nathan moved to the United States, Al, who had been working there since a young age, took over the business. It thrived under his management. To accommodate his growing clientele, he moved the studio to Eglinton Avenue and later to 170 Davenport Road, where it is situated today. Al made a name for himself as a portrait photographer, using natural light in innovative ways to create more natural looking portraits. Al’s primary work involved producing portraits of families, weddings, bar mitzvahs, special events, and dinners. Most of his early clients were from the Jewish community. He was also paid to produce portraits for local entrepreneurs. Moreover, his multi-year contract with the city gave him sole responsibility of producing portraits for the mayors and council members. He later branched out beyond the Jewish community and began to produce images for businessmen and leaders from the Italian community in Toronto. In addition to the paid contracts involving local personalities and groups, Al Gilbert has also produced many artistic portraits of local, national, and international celebrities, artists, and leaders, such as Wayne and Shuster, Howie Mandel, Oscar Peterson, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, Robertson Davies, several Canadian prime ministers, Prince Charles, and the last Pope. He also produced portraits for all of the Israeli prime ministers, which were made into postage stamps by the Israeli government. Gilbert’s work, therefore, captures a huge range of individuals from the ordinary brides to extraordinary world leaders. Throughout his career, Al has won many professional awards and accolades from his peers. He is the three-time recipient of the prestigious Photographer of the Year award of the Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC). He has been named Fellow of the photographic societies in Canada, Britain, and the United States. In 1990, he was awarded the Order of Canada. In January 2007, the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) presented him with their Lifetime Achievement Award. This award is the highest honour that PPA can bestow on a person for their body of work and influence on professional photography.

Admin History/Bio

Gordon Mendly (1904–1998) was born Gordon Gimpel Mendlevich in Kielce, Poland on 3 May 1904. He was the son of Israel and Masha Mendlevich. He immigrated to Canada in 1924 as a photographic apprentice and immediately began working out of his home at 305A Queen Street West. This first studio was called International Studio. In 1932, he started Famous Studios, which was located at his residence at 285 College Street. His final studio was at 3145 Bathurst Street, which he sold to fellow photographer Nir Bareket, upon his retirement in 1977. Mendly was married to Sarah (née Rawet) Mendly. He died on 5 January 1998, at the age of ninety-three.

As a studio photographer, Mendly photographed many members of the Jewish community in Toronto. He was also commissioned for weddings and special occasions, along with various events organized by Jewish organizations and agencies. In particular, it is the latter of these commissions that are most illustrative of the Toronto Jewish community. These include events such as the Zionist Organization of Canada's conventions, Cloakmaker Union rallies, and Jewish Old Folks’ Home bingo nights. His work has won awards in both Canada and the United States.

Mendly was also involved in many of the organizations that he photographed. He was the past president of the Herzl Zion Club; an executive member of the Canadian Jewish Congress Central Region, JIAS and Toronto B’nai Brith Central Region; board member of the Jewish Home for the Aged and Baycrest Hospital; vice-president of the Men’s Service Group of the Jewish Home for the Aged; on the executive of the Judaea Lodge, Knights of Phythias No. 52 and the Keltzer Sick Benefit Society; chairman of Jewish National Fund; affiliated with the Brunswick Avenue Talmud Torah and the American Society of Photographers; and co-chairman of the 1956-1961 UJA Metropolitan Division.

Scope and Content

This fonds consists of approximately 1449 black and white and colour cellulose acetate negatives, dating from circa 1955 to 1973. The negatives consist of individual and group portraits, Toronto Jewish businesses, special events, meetings and conferences held by various Jewish organizations and agencies in Toronto, and a small sampling of commissioned wedding, anniversary and bar mitzvah portraits. The fonds has been arranged into the following series: Portraits, Events and organizations, Businesses, and Weddings, anniversaries and Bar Mitzvahs. The series have been described to the file and/or item level.

Physical Condition

Approximately 100 negatives, predominantly from the 1950s, are suffering from vinegar syndrome, as is evident from the odour emanating from them, as well as the general visual conditions. These negatives have been segregated from the rest of the collection and have been housed in boxes CS14-CS16

Some of the negatives are also suffering from “bluing” or “silver mirroring” -- the consequence of oxidative-reductive deterioration. Although this is a slow process, eventually the silver ions will create a fogged effect on the photograph, drastically reducing the quality of the image.

Accession consists of approximately 3000 portrait negatives and prints taken by Sylvia Schwartz. The photographs depict members of the Jewish community, jazz musicians, and a small number of non-Jews as well. Within each box, the records are divided up into envelopes, which include anywhere from one to twenty negatives and occasionally a small number of prints.

Custodial History

The negatives were in the possession of Herb Solway, Sylvia Schwartz's nephew until they were donated to the Archives.

Administrative History

Sylvia Schwartz was born in 1914 in Toronto. Her parents were Joseph and Gertrude, who were respectively born in the United States and Austria. She had two older sisters, Fannie and Rosetta (Ruth). Her family moved to Toronto around 1903. Joseph was a furier who eventually set up his own business, J. Schwartz & Co. Ltd., a fur manufacturing company on Madison Avenue. He later became a partner in the Park Plaza Hotel on Avenue Road. Unlike her siblings, Sylvia was a dwarf, who led a successful life despite her physical limitations. She became a prominent portrait photographer in Toronto and owned a studio on Grenville Road. She began her career during the 1940s, capturing images of families, servicemen during the war as well as brides. She eventually carved out a niche for herself mid-career, specializing in children's portraiture. In addition to her professional activities, she was also recognized for her commitment to Communism. She befriended many famous American artists who were supporters of the cause, such as Paul Robeson, Duke Ellington, Lena Horne and Cab Caloway, travelling across the border frequently to attend meetings and work with her American comrades. In 1976 she set up a special children's book award to honour her late sister Ruth, who was a respected Toronto bookseller. In 2004, six years after Sylvia's death, her family changed the name of the award to the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children's Book Awards. The awards are administered by the Ontario Arts Council which selects the school and juries. The Ontario Arts Foundation, the Schwartz Foundation and the Canadian Booksellers Association, in turn, are responsible for producing the shortlist of books for the jury.

Custodial History

The negatives and proofs were donated by Sylvia's nephew, Herb Solway in two accessions: 2008-1/1 and 2008-4/5.

Scope and Content

The records are in the form of proofs and negatives that were taken by photographer Sylvia Schwartz during her career. They include images of her family, their cottage, her friends, events that she participated in as well as portraits of children, servicemen and women, famous entertainers that she was acquainted with, and prominent individuals from the Jewish community.

The records are arranged into series which include portraits of prominent Toronto Jews, military portraits, child portraits, simchas/milestones, entertainers, family and friends, and events. Each series consists of both negatives and corresponding proofs. The proofs have been retained for reference purposes as well as to document the decision-making of the photographer.

Irving Posluns is a member of the Posluns family. His mother was Sadie Posluns from Los Angeles. Irving married Shirley Carpman (m. Posluns). They had three children: Marie Helaine (b. 1951), Harold Lewis (b. 1952), and Randi Lynn (b. 1960).

He originally worked at the family's ladies wear factory and later in life became a commercial portrait photographer. His business, the Irving Posluns Portrait Studio, is located on Broadview Avenue in Toronto. Ryerson University's Irving A. Posluns Scholarship for portrait photography is named in his honour.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of a typed account of Lou Hoffer's experience as a Holocaust survivor in Transnistria. The account was written on the occassion of the establishment by Lou and Magda Hoffer of the Transnistria Forest Grove in Jerusalem through the Jewish National Fund (JNF). Also included is a printout of a photo of Lou and Magda alongside a brief description of the JNF gift and the original certificate presented to the Hoffers from JNF.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of textual and graphic material documenting Lou Hoffer's involvement with the Transnistria Survivors' Association and the Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre. Included are photographs of Lou with student groups at OISE and Havergal college, an image of Lou lighting a candle with a bar mitzvah student as part of the Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre's Bar/Bat Mitzvah Project of Remembrance. Accession also includes a flyer, newspaperclippings and thank you cards.

Administrative History

Lou (Leizer) Hoffer is a Holocaust survivor who is a past president of the Transnistria Holocaust Survivors' Association and was a speaker with the Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre in Toronto.

Lou was born in 1927 in Vijnitz, Northern Bucovina, Romania to David and Chaya Sure Drassinover Hoffer. During the Second World War, Lou and his family was deported (along with all the Jewish people in his town) to the death camps of Transnistria (a territory in Ukraine). He was liberated in 1944.

After the war, Lou, his parents and his younger brother, Joe, wandered through various displaced persons camps in Europe. They eventually immigrated to Canada in March 1948 on the ship Nea Helas. He married Madga (nee Pressburger) in 1959. Together they had three sons and one daughter.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of two photographs taken of members of the Transnistria Survivors' Association by the Holocaust memorial at Earl Bales Park, Toronto. In one of the photographs, members are standing with their children and grandchildren. Also included is one JNF certificate documenting trees planted by Lou and Magda Hoffer in the Transnistria Grove in the Aminadav Forest (Jerusalem, Israel) in honour of their parents.

Scope and Content

This accession consists of four framed photographs taken by Robert Burley. The photographs document the Anshei Minsk Synagogue and were part of the exhibit "Recurrent Memories: Historic Jewish Sites in Canada and Poland," which was held at Gallery 345 from 23 April 2008 to 18 May 2008. The photographs are as follows:
