The Shaarei Tzedek Congregation was founded by new Russian immigrants around 1901. The congregation’s first shul was situated originally on 29 Centre Avenue, south of Dundas on the east side of the street, in the vicinity of present-day Nathan Philips Square. Louis Gurofsky (1871-1934), a prominent member of the Jewish community and a business man, lived in a house at 397 Markham Street with his family. In 1937, following Gurofsky’s death in 1934, Shaarei Tzedek occupied the Markham Street house of the Gurofsky family and renovations were soon undertaken to convert the residence into a synagogue, designed by Benjamin Swartz.

- History
- Following the Second World War, a second wave of Russian immigrants, many of whom were Holocaust survivors, found spiritual refuge at the Markham Street shul, and membership again began to rise. In the 1950s the shul employed the services of Rabbi Israel Frankel, a prominent Jewish scholar and one of the founders of the Toronto Jewish Public Library. As the Jewish community increasingly moved to the northern and outlying suburbs of Toronto, this general trend began to take its toll on the membership of the Shaarei Tzedek into the 1960s. The congregation was obliged to declare bankruptcy in 1968. However, a concerted fund-raising effort by Jewish community leaders in the area re-established the congregation in 1970, under the spiritual and administrative leadership of the shul’s president, Dr. Joseph Greenberg.

- Accession consists of a single page article from Beth Tzedec on their 100 Anniversary year. It announces the Endowment of a Wall Case by David and Martha Sud. It goes on to talk about David's early life experience in Bialystok, Poland and his liberation from Dachau. He arrived in Toronto in 1948 where he first worked in the needle trade and then the fur trade. Eventually he embarked in the building trade. He married Martha Grossman, a native Torontonian. They had four sons, Avrom, Howard, Elliott and Warren.

- File consists of materials relating to the Federation of Jewish Women's Organizations Conference of Women, held on 7 March 1978 at Beth Tzedec Synagogue. Photographs consist of one portrait of Edith Levy (Chairman, Conference of Women) and one photograph of (L to R) Esther Goodbaum, Robert Cooper, Flora MacDonald, and Ruth Bass. Documents consist of a press release form announcing the conference, a program, . The program featured a dialogue between Mel Hurtig (founding member of the Committee for an Independent Canada), Beverley Smith (former Liason Officer to Rene Levesque), and Peter Trueman (Global TV news anchorman), moderated by Ruth Schwartz (Federation of Jewish Women's Organizations); the afternoon featured a keynote talk by Mme. Solange Chaput-Rolland (member of the Task Force on Canadian Unity). File also consists of news clippings related to the conference, Beverley Smith's curriculum vitae, correspondence between Mel Hurtig and Edith Levy, a biography of Mel Hurtig, Beverley Smith, and Peter Trueman, and a letter from Maurice Lucow at the Toronto Jewish Congress to the Toronto Star requesting an article be written about Edith Levy and the conference.
