Johnny Wayne (1918-1990) was born John Louis Weingarten in Toronto to Sarah and Charles Byron Weingarten. He was married to Beatrice Lokash and they had three children: Michael, Jamie and Brian.

Frank Shuster (1916-2002) was born to Bess and Jack Shuster in Toronto. The family moved to Niagara Falls where Jack Shuster ran a local theatre called the Colonial Theatre. Married in 1947, Frank and his wife, Ruth Burstyn, had two children named Rosalind and Steve. Frank's cousin Joe Shuster was the creator of the Superman comic strip.

Wayne and Shuster met in the tenth grade at Harbord Collegiate in Toronto. Both went to the University of Toronto for degrees in English Literature.

In 1941, they started a show called Wife Preservers for CFRB, after which they started writing and performing a comedy show called the Wayne and Shuster show for the CBC's Trans-Canada Network. In 1942, they both joined the infantry and were stationed to perform for the Army Show travelling across Canada to different military bases. They took the show to Normandy after D-Day and wrote a 52 week series for veterans and spent six weeks entertaining the Commonwealth Division in Korea. In 1946, they returned to the CBC performing the Wayne and Shuster Show on the radio. In 1958 they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in the United States of America; in fact, they became a regular feature on Ed Sullivan, breaking the record for the number of appearances for any one guest. Wayne and Shuster created numerous hour long television shows for the CBC, and were a Sunday night fixture for many years to follow.

Wayne and Shuster's comedy has been described as literate slapstick. They used classical or Shakespearean settings and characters as the backdrop for their comic skits. When they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, they used the premise of Julius Caesar for their skit called Rinse the Blood off My Toga. In 1999, they were inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame.

Johnny Wayne (b. Louis Weingarten, May 28, 1918) was a Canadian comedian best known as a member of the comedy duo Wayne and Shuster (with Frank Shuster).

Wayne was the son of a successful clothing manufacturer who spoke several languages and the eldest of seven children.

Wayne and Shuster met at Harbord Collegiate, Toronto, where they performed in annual revues. After receiving BAs in English from the University of Toronto, they were both studying for their masters when WWII intervened. After enlisting in the infantry, they were soon reunited, writing and performing for The Army Show.

Following the war, they returned to Canada and worked together on radio (by 1946 they had their own show on CBC) and later on television. In 1950 they began appearing as guests on various American TV programs, including a record sixty-seven performances on "The Ed Sullivan Show."

Johnny Wayne died in 1990 of brain cancer.

Accession consists of records of the USDS Board of Directors, Membership, Executive Committee, working committees, programs and office files. The records document budgeting, teachers' welfare, membership appointments, synagogue affiliation, the 25th anniversary of USDS and transportation. The records include minutes, notices, agendas, correspondence, memos to parents, memos to teachers and lists. The following committees and groups are documented: Scholarships and Bursaries; Personnel; Ways and Means; Growth; House; Building; Fiscal; Special Tuition Committee, Board of Jewish Education; Parents' Association; CHAT; Junior High School committee; Education committee; Special Education sub-committee; Mainstreaming committee; and Pre-school sub-committee. As well, special programs are highlighted. These include: the Cultural Enrichment program; Keren Ami; Avraham Nachum Memorial (1976-1980); and French Language Grants. Finally, there are files pertaining to interaction with the Ontario Jewish Association for Equity in Education and the Ontario Association of Alternative and Independent Schools.

Administrative History

In 1957, the Beth Tzedec Synagogue, a Conservative congregation, opened a congregational day school, the Foundation day school, consisting of a kindergarten and grades one to four. In 1961, eight other synagogues joined with Beth Tzedec to form the United Synagogue Day School. Beginning in 1965, the school offered instruction from Nursery to grade nine. From 1971 to 1973, the United Synagogue Day School also included a high school.

The school was founded in order to provide students with a complete general and Judaic education. The language of instruction in the Judaic studies was Hebrew. The Judaic curriculum was presented within the framework of Conservative Judaism. However, the students were taught the traditional customs and observances. Within the confines of the school, students were expected to conform to traditional, religious behavior. Emphasis was placed on the diversity of Judaism and the importance of the re-establishment of the state of Israel.

Each day included instruction in both Judaic and general studies, which were sometimes integrated together. Wherever possible, the general studies were approached from a Jewish perspective.
