- Accession consists of one booklet from the Apter Hilfs Farein 5th Annual Banquet held at Beth Jacob Synagogue in Toronto on Sunday, February 6, 1944.
- Administrative History
- The Apter Hilfs Farein was a landmanshaft organization formed by Polish immigrants to Toronto in the early twentieth century and the precursor to the Apter Friendly Society.
- Upon immigrating to Canada, the immigrants purchased a small synagogue on Centre Avenue near Dundas Street in 1905. In 1918, in anticipation of more Apter immigrants coming to Toronto after the First World War, the synagogue was sold and a larger one purchased on Beverley Street. That same year a relief committee was founded as a means of helping the Apter landsleit in Poland. And while many of its members did not belong to the synagogue, the committee was permitted to hold their meetings there.
- After the Second World War, the younger members of the relief committee decided to form an organization that would have a different mandate other than relief. Thus, in 1946 the Apter Friendly Society was founded with a membership of forty. The society instituted a series of cultural events and programming and maintained it's original social and welfare functions as well

- Accession consists of Yiddish correspondence addressed to the Ostrovtzer Society’s secretary Max Hartstone. The letters are from Jewish refugees from around the globe all of whom were born in Ostrowiec, Poland. In addition, there are numerous receipts related to Max’s work with the Ostrovtzer Society including those that directly relate to the Society’s refugee support activities including postage for parcels being sent overseas, donation receipts, bank cash transfers, advertisements, relief committee contributions, parcel receipts and more. In addition, there is a listing of refugees originating from Ostrowiec, Poland residing in Germany’s U.S. zone. This list identifies the family name, father’s name, age, number of family members and location in Germany. There is a second copy of this German list that has been translated into Yiddish. Additional documents include meeting minutes from the Central Committee of Ostrowtzer Hilfs Farein in North and South America (1947), annual reports from UJWF (1946), and the Jewish Immigrant Aid Society of Canada’s (1945), a 40th anniversary ribbon from the Beth Haknesseth Hagodol (Ostrovtzer Synagogue), programs from the society's eighteenth anniversary banquet (1950) and a testimonial dinner program in honour of Joshua J. Barsht, (1952).
- The accession also includes photographs of Max Hartstone's business Crown Bread Company at 319 and later 311 Augusta Street, Kensington Market and publicity stills from various Toronto events.
- Custodial History
- Max Hartstone's daughter, Nancy, recalls that these letters, received by her father Max Hartstone in his capacity as secretary of the Ostrovtzer Society, were stored in large bakery boxes in their garage. Most of these letters were destroyed by water damage.

- Khava Soreh Rozenblat was born circa 1924, possibly in Ostrowiec, Poland. In the mid-1940s, she lived in Paris with her stepmother, Mrs. Rozenblat. Khava worked in a store as a salesperson and was planning a wedding to a young Jewish man from Warsaw.

- Szlama Kuperstik (b. 1921) was born in Ostrowiec, Poland, to Mendl and Devoyre (née Shteynhart). After surviving Sachsenhausen, Auschwitz, Flossenbürg, and Bergen-Belsen, he was brought to Sweden in July of 1945 to recover from an illness. It was in Sågmyra, Sweden, that he met and married a young Jewish woman from Poland named Devoyre in early 1946. Later that same year, Szlama and his wife moved to Kristinehamn, Sweden.
- Alternate spellings of his surname are Kupershtik and Kupersztyk. Alternative spellings of his first name are Shlomo and Shloyme.

The bulk of the photographs are photocopies of composite and group images of members; however, there is one original composite photograph of members (1931) and a copy photograph of the Lagov market. Also included is a constitution for the society (1938), copies of articles written by members which outline their memories of Lagov, and a brief meeting report (1997). Records are in English and Yiddish.

- The Folks Farein, also known as the Hebrew National Association, was established in 1914 by a group of Toronto Jewish immigrants as a society dedicated to anti-missionary and educational outreach. They were first located at 23 Cecil Street and moved to 37 Cecil Street around 1940.
- In the early years of the Folks Farein's existence, Christian missions and a number of Jewish converts to Christianity sought to exploit the situation of poor Jews in the community through the distribution of direct relief, services of doctors and midwives and by street-corner preaching and proselytizing. To counteract the work of the Toronto missionaries the Folks Farein offered a number of services including welfare for working mothers, a reading room, English language classes and translation services for Yiddish immigrants.
- When the threat from missionary activity was no longer an issue, the Folks Farein transformed itself into a philanthropic society. Under its revised mandate the society looked after the sick and needy in hospitals, sanatoriums, mental health institutions and in their homes, and arranged for free doctor services, translation services, medicine, dentures, eyeglasses, orthopedic shoes and medical appliances. The Folks Farein guaranteed the full or partial payment of medical bills by maintaining a fund in several hospitals for the benefit of Jewish patients in need of assistance. They provided assistance to seniors applying for old age pensions, to widows and mothers applying for benefits, assisted needy families and patients with kosher meals, provided cash relief during Passover, and fed and billeted the unemployed and homeless at their premises at 37 Cecil Street.
- In the course of their work, the Folks Farein collaborated with many Jewish organizations and societies such as the Jewish Immigrant Aid Society, Jewish Family Welfare Bureau, Relief Unemployment Fund, Jewish Joint Application Bureau, Jewish Children's Bureau, the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of Toronto, Canadian Jewish Congress and the Toronto Hebrew Free Loan Association.
- Its basis of revenue came from its large membership, house-to-house contributions from the public and from special events such as its annual ball, Moes Chittin campaign, Purim ball, and beauty contests.
- In addition to its regular activities the Folks Farein assumed responsibility for providing aid to refugees of the Second World War: the first group arriving from Europe in 1945 and in 1948 to a group of Jewish tailors liberated from the DP camps of Germany. In 1947, the Folks Farein established Hachnoses Orchim, a temporary shelter to accommodate refugees and displaced persons. The shelter was located at 37 Cecil Street.
- The Folks Farein's first officers were Mr. J. Graner (president), Mr. J. Meisniker (vice-president), Mr. Meyer Littner (superintendent), Chuna Mosoff and Mr. W. Welman (trustees), Miss Weiner and Mr. Cohen (board of education), Mr. A. Kaminsky (recording secretary) and Mr. Cohen (treasurer). Mr. Epstein referred to as "Grandfather" was one of the founders of the Folks Farein.
- Other pioneers included Moshe Oelbaum, and M. Spiegel (1st vice-president), J. Hurwitz (1st vice-president and president), Abraham Sher, S.M. Shapiro Shlesinger, Joseph Grenner, Mrs. Minna Winter (president of the Women's Auxiliary) and Kalman Wagner. In 1930, David Green assumed the position of president of the Folks Farein and served as its exclusive president from 1934 until his passing on 13 May 1977. Sam Cohen was then elected the new president of the Folks Farein.

- Fonds consists of records documenting the Folks Farein's philanthropic activities in the Toronto Jewish community from 1914 to 1977. Records include meeting minutes and agendas of the executive board and committees, resolutions of board of directors, newspaper clippings in both Yiddish and English, publicity material, photographs, general correspondence, architectural drawings, cemetery deeds, legal documents, records relating to David Green's personal interests, financial and fundraising records, wills and bequests, and client case files. The records have been arranged into nine series: Meeting minutes; Scrapbooks; Executive services; Celebrations and events; Building and operations; David Green; Finance and fundraising; and Case files.

- When the threat from missionaries was no longer an issue, they became a philanthropic society dedicated to ministering to the sick and needy. Under this revised mandate, the Folks Farein provided dentures, eyeglasses, orthopaedic shoes, operative support, crutches, artificial limbs and other related medical appliances wherever needed. They maintained close contact with hospitals, sanatoria, mental institutions, local jails and reformatories to help needy Jewish patients and prisoners. They also distributed kosher meals during Passover; helped seniors get old age pensions and widows and mothers and their children get allowances where fathers were sick or incapacitated; and fed and billeted the unemployed and homeless at the Folks Farein’s premises at 37 Cecil Street. In 1945, when the first group of Jewish refugees from Europe arrived in Toronto, the Folks Farein temporarily accommodated many on its premises and provided them with meals.

- Founded in 1924, the Ostrowtzer Hilfs Farein was a landsmanshaft society named after the town of Ostrowiec in Poland. Initially a function of the Ostrovtzer Shul, the society’s mission was to provide support to Ostrovtzers who had immigrated to Toronto, offering small loans and medical assistance and fostering a sense of community. The society began with thirty-eight members, offering assistance to Ostrovtzers arriving in Toronto. Over a decade, membership grew to one hundred, enabling the society to hire a doctor for medical services.
- While immigration policies and the outbreak of war slowed membership growth, it surged again with the arrival of Holocaust survivors. Postwar, the Ostrowtzer Society extended relief and aid to refugees in displacement camps, Europe, and Israel. Around this time, it became known as the United Ostrowtzer Hilfs Committee.
- In 1946, the society organized a landmark conference in Toronto, leading to the formation of the Central Committee of Ostrowtzer Hilfs Fareinen in North and South America. Max Hartstone served as the committee's executive secretary.
- The society expanded its reach, creating a young men's branch and evolving into the Ostrovtzer Independent Mutual Benefit Society. In recent years, it has provided support for Israel, the Baycrest Foundation, UJA Federation, and more. It also owns cemetery land, ensuring that each of its members receives a proper Jewish burial. The society also established an endowment fund through the Jewish Federation of Greater Toronto.
- Custodial History
- The records were donated by Nancy Freeman, Max Hartstone’s daughter, on 17 October 2017. A subsequent donation was made on 19 April 2022. Nancy recalls that the letters, received by her father Max Hartstone in his capacity as secretary of the United Ostrowtzer Hilfs Committee, were stored in large bakery boxes in their garage.
- Scope and Content
- Fonds consists of records documenting the activities of the United Ostrowtzer Hilfs Committee. The fonds primarily contains correspondence from other Ostrovtzer societies and Holocaust survivors from Ostrowiec, Poland, located throughout North and South America, Europe, and Palestine. Photographs are included with some of the correspondence. Other materials include minutes, notices of meetings, financial records, invitations, events memorabilia, speeches, and newspaper clippings. The materials document the efforts of the United Ostrowtzer Hilfs Committee, in collaboration with Ostrovtzer societies worldwide, to provide assistance and support to Holocaust survivors from Ostrowiec. These records also offer insight into the immediate, postwar experiences of Holocaust survivors

- Laib Piltz was likely from Ostrowiec, Poland. He immigrated to Toronto in 1911 and, in 1912, helped to found the Yiddish National Radical School. He lived in New York for a period, where he served as the secretary of the NYST organization. He then moved to Youngstown, Ohio, where he took on the role of secretary for the Poale Zion organization and the National World Union Youngstown branch. Subsequently, he moved to Chicago, where he held the position of secretary for the Ostrowiec Aid Society in the mid-1940s. He had a wife, Rachel, and two daughters.
