Bill Stern's parents were not supposed to take the train with him, but they insisted, and travelled as far as Newcastle, Ontario with their son.
Scope and Content
This item is a photograph of Bill Stern with his parents, Moishe and Fanny Stern. The photo was taken at Exhibition grounds, before Bill boarded the train for Halifax, where he would sail overseas to the fighting in Europe. Bill is dressed in his uniform and is standing in front of the train with his arms around his parents.

Elioham Louis Bochner, son of Moses Bochner and Rachel Eisen, was born circa 1884. He married Fannie Kurtz in York (Toronto) on 21 September 1908. Fannie, born in Austria circa 1889, was the daughter of Benjamin Kurtz and Rebecca Engel. The Kurtz family emigrated from Austria in 1891.

This item is a photograph of Bill and his mother Fanny Stern. The photograph was taken at Exhibition grounds before Bill boarded the train to Halifax, where he would sail overseas to the fighting in Europe. Bill is standing in front of the train with his arm around his mother's shoulder.

Admin History/Bio
May Cohen was born in Montreal in 1931 to Sam and Mania Lipshitz and grew up in Toronto. After graduating from high school as the top student in Ontario, she attended medical school at the University of Toronto and again led her class, earning a gold medal for academic excellence. Dr. Cohen first practiced family medicine in Toronto and then joined McMaster University's Faculty of Health Sciences in 1977 to teach and practice family medicine. She co-founded the Women's Health Office at McMaster and also the Women's Health InterSchool Curriculum Committee for Ontario's medical schools. From 1991 to 1996 she served the Faculty of Health Sciences as associate dean of Health Services.
Dr. May Cohen is married to Dr. Gerry Cohen, a semi-retired family practitioner in Hamilton, and is the mother of Eric, Russell, and the late Stuart. She has five grandchildren.

He married Pearl Tureck on 11 July 1943 and had 2 children, Alan and Linda (now Halperin). He has 4 grandchildren, Sasha, Rachel, Jeffrey, and Joshua.
Pearl Stackle, née Tureck (b. 6 May 1922 - d. 30 November 1974) was born in Toronto and had 2 sisters, Molly Segal (d. 22 July 2010) and Goldie Cooper. She married Ben Stackle on 11 July 1943 and had 2 children, Alan and Linda (now Halperin). She has 4 grandchildren, Sasha, Rachel, Jeffrey, and Joshua.

File consists of records documenting the planning and celebrations for the Women's Auxiliary's silver anniversary. Included are meeting notices, agendas and minutes for the Silver Anniversary Committee, correspondence, a speech delivered by Dora Till at the Silver Anniversary meeting in Oct. 1980, agendas for the Silver Anniversary meeting, and lists of Auxiliary memberships for "Silvers". Of note are hand written reminiscences by Pearl Freedhoff describing her mother's (Esther Narval) activities at the Home for the Aged and her own memory of the dedication of the Jewish Old Folks Home.

Sam Stern left Canada for Palestine in 1933. Upon his arrival, he joined the Degania Bet Kibbutz, where he stayed until 1934, when he moved to Tel Aviv and worked as a bookkeeper. In 1936, he helped found the Ginosar kibbutz. He was killed in 1939 while on guard duty.
Scope and Content
This item is a photograph of a group of young people in Palestine just before leaving for the Ginosar kibbutz. Sam Stern is lying on the ground in front and standing in the back row second from the right is his girlfriend, Yael.
