- The Festival Committee's goal was to ensure that each Jewish holiday was a joyful celebration for residents and patients and to enrich their religious and cultural life. The committee sponsored four events each year: Purim, Mother's and Father's Day (often held in conjunction with Shavuot), Sukkot, and Hanukkah. Planning for each event typically began six weeks in advance and a finalizing meeting was usually held ten days prior to the event. Once the event was over, the Committee held an evaluation meeting. Residents and volunteers helped Committee members prepare decorations and other items for the events.

- The Israel at 50 Committee was a consortium of nearly 150 organizations under the auspices of UJA Federation and the Consulate General of Israel.

- File contains notes and minutes from meetings of the Israel at 50 Cabinet meeting of Consortium members and meetings of UJA's Festival Committee; the first newsletter of the Consortium from February 1998; printed promotional materials such as posters and a flyer; the rental contract for nine character costumes; an information outline; and correspondence about entertainment. A brochure includes a map showing all the attractions, entertainment acts, food and marketplace vendors. - The World Festival of Youth and Students is a left-wing/socialist youth festival that has been held every two years since 1947. The festival in Vienna was the seventh of its kind since the war and attracted 18,000 young people from 112 countries. It was held over the period of two weeks in July 1959. The festival was organized by the National Federation of Labour Youth with delegations organized by the Young Communist League of Canada. Canada sent 150 delegates to the festival.
- Sylvia probably travelled there to photograph the festival as it advocated and supported ideas about socialism, equality and world peace, all of which she shared. Her friend, Paul Robeson, who she was visiting in England in the months prior to the festival also performed and spoke at the event.

- File consists of images of the World Festival of Youth and Students in Vienna, Austria. Images include views of Vienna, the Prater festival grounds and various individuals from the opening parade, as well as an image of Ella Fitzgerald performing.
