Accession consists of one VHS cassette of approximately 10 minutes of original family home movies of the Weinstock family vacationing in Pontypool. The video begins with an introduction to the home movies by Nathan Weinstock. The video contains scenes of activities including swimming, dancing, fishing, and playing cards.

Administrative History

Nathan Weinstock (b. 1950) is the son of Abraham (b. 1917) and Chanah (b. 1922) Weinstock who were both born in Poland. He has an older brother, Joseph (b. 1946) and a younger sister, Lily (b. 1954). The Weinstock family vacationed in Pontypool between 1956 and 1962.

Camp Winnebagoe is still operating today as a private co-ed Jewish summer camp for children eight to sixteen years of age. It was founded by Joseph B. and Sadie Danson and was located on 500 acres of land near Huntsville in Ontario's Muskoka region. The camp catered to the Jewish community and provided a variety of different athletic and social programmes, such as arts and crafts, canoeing, baseball, swimming, music and nature studies. Ida Siegel's son David, was a counsellor at the camp.

Item is a photograph of a group of swimmers at Camp Winnebagoe in Huntsville, Ontario. The image shows both male and female swimmers in the lake.

Accession consists of one photograph of Sadie and Nathan Friedman standing in a field at Crystal's Resort in Pontypool around the summer of 1930.

Administrative History

Nathan Friedman (b. 1906-d. 1954) was born in Poland and Sadie (Book) Friedman (b. 1911- d. 1991) was born in Hamilton, ON. They were married in Toronto in June 1929. Nathan worked as a furrier in Toronto. They began vacationing in Pontypool during the early 1930s and originally rented a loft in the Crystal's barn. Later they rented a cabin at Crystal's Resort. The donor, Jerry Friedman, is the son of Nathan and Sadie.

Pontypool was a popular summer resort spot for vacationing Jews from the 1940s to the 1960s. The area was relatively cheap and had a pond as its swimming spot. Kosher meals would often be brought in for the vacationers who arrived on two trains daily from Union station. Charlie and Surah Crystal were the owners of several resort cabins resort that was popular amongst the Jewish vacationers.

Administrative History

Louis and Sarah Zeidenber lived in Toronto but spent most of their summers at their cottage on Bornstein hill in Pontypool, which was a popular summer resort spot for vacationing Jews from the 1940s to the 1960s. The area was relatively cheap and had a pond as its swimming spot. Kosher meals would often be brought in for the vacationers who arrived on two trains daily from Union station.

For approximately three years the Zeidenber's rented the rear half of their cottage to their friends Louis and Irene Miller, until the Miller's started to rent a cottage from the Bornsteins.

Nathan Gittelmacher was an immigrant from the Ukraine who moved to Toronto and first worked as a photographer at Empire Studios. In 1922, he opened up his own business called Elite Studios, located at 615 Queen Street West. He specialized in portraits and catered to a largely Jewish clientele.

Nathan Gittelmacher changed his family's name to Gilbert in the early 1940s and subsequently altered the family business name to Gilbert Studios. Nathan was married to Nina and they had four children named: Lou, Jack, Albert and Ruth.

This accession consists of textual records related to the Holy Blossom Temple renewal project, which is the controversial renovation campaign, and the Temple's 150th anniversary celebrations in 2007. The records include correspondence sent out to the congregation, pamphlets, flyers, and promotional material. Also included in this accession is an Oakdale Golf and Country Club membership roster from 2004 to 2006 and two photographs of David Steinhauer, a former teacher at Jarvis Collegiate standing in front of the school during the 1940s.

Administrative History

Nancy Draper is the daughter of Carl Frankel, a past prominent member of the Toronto Jewish community and formerly associated with Holy Blossom Temple, of which Nancy is still a member. She attended Jarvis Collegiate Institute for five years as a youth.

Accession consists of a membership directory for the Art Diggers in 1964-1965 and a photograph of Joseph Rosenfeld, a lawyer who practiced on Carlton Street. Rosenfeld was a colleague and mentor to the donor's husband, Darrell Draper.

Administrative History

Nancy Frankel (b. 1928) is the daughter of Carl and Dorothy Jacobs Frankel. She married Darrell Draper on December 10th, 1949. Nancy is an active member of the Jewish community and was a member of the Art Diggers group -- a club run by the Council of Jewish Women that met regularly to learn about art. Nancy is a longtime volunteer at the OJA.

Accession consists of home movies documenting the Levy family of Hamilton, Ontario. Included is footage of birthday parties, children playing at their home and in parks, swimming, sailing, a football game at Ivor Wynne Stadium, a trip to Algonquin Park, family picnics, and trips to Quebec and New York.

Administrative History

Nancy Levy was born in 1951 to Corinne (née Cohn) and Edgar Levy. (Corinne and Edgar's name was originally Moshe Noss. He was born in the Ukraine and orphaned at an early age. Around 1921 he immigrated to Canada through the help of a Mr. Grafstein. Once in Canada, Edgar and his brothers were adopted into different families. The Levy family adopted Edgar and he took their name.

Edgar married Corrine Cohn in 1946. Edgar had a business in Hamilton called Piston Service, which was a wholesaler for car parts. Corrine drove a truck for this business and eventually became the bookkeeper for another firm. After marriage, they lived in Hamilton at 18 West Third.

Nancy had two younger siblings: Ann (1956–) and Lois (1958–2018). She married Wayne Greenberg in 1979 and they divorced around 1985. She studied medical lab technology at a community college and worked at various hospitals and businesses, including Henderson Hospital in Hamilton and Baycrest.

Administrative History

The Noss family traces its origins to Russia/Ukraine. The patriarch, Avraham Noss, died after contracting typhus after being badly beaten in a pogrom. His wife, Toiba, died of either cholera, typhus, or influenza (accounts vary). They left behind four children: Raisa, Meyer, Joseph, and Moshe. The extended family took care of the four orphans but did not have enough food to feed them, so the three youngest were put in a Jewish orphanage. The eldest, Raisa, was too old but came every day to visit her brothers. One day, she arrived only to be told, "The missionaries took them away." The entire orphanage was brought to Canada. A Mr. Hershman from Toronto was involved as was a congregation of Christadelphians from Hamilton including a Mr. Farrar who owned a good-quality clothing store.

Raisa remained in Russia, where she received an education from the Communist Party and became an engineer. Meyer kept in touch with his sister for as long as possible, but the two eventually lost touch.

The Drazin family took in Meyer, the eldest brother, although the family never adopted him. Despite this, he changed his name to Drazin. Joseph ("Joe") was adopted but was returned to Children's Aid, where he went from foster home to foster home. He eventually took back the Noss family name. As for Moshe, he was adopted by Moses Levy and Marietta Steinert. Moshe's new parents changed his name to Edgar Steinert Levy. Edgar Levy is thus the same individual as Moshe Noss. Marietta was well-known in the Hamilton community, and a chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women was named after her.

Accession consists of material documenting Nancy Levy, primarily education records, such as citizenship awards and scholarship awards issued by the Board of Education for the City of Hamilton, Ontario. It also consists of certificates and patches issued by the Canadian Red Cross Society and the Royal Life Saving Society of Canada while at Camp Kadimah and Hamilton's Recreation Centre as well a photograph of a Temple Anshe Sholom confirmation class taken in 1967. Identified in the photograph are: (back row) Michael Epstein, Paul Simon, Leslie Mitchinick, Rabbi Baskin, Michael Isaac, Robert Mitchnick, Harold Barnett, Brian Singer, (front row) Cheryl Hebscher, Sharon Leutcher, Robin Raphael, Gerrie Perrell, Nancy Levy, Jacqueline Houston, Elaine Hotz, Ethel Landrecht, and Debbie Minden.

Administrative History

Nancy Levy was born in 1951 to Corinne (née Cohn) and Edgar Levy. (Corinne and Edgar's name was originally Moshe Noss. He was born in the Ukraine and orphaned at an early age. Around 1921 he immigrated to Canada through the help of a Mr. Grafstein. Once in Canada, Edgar and his brothers were adopted into different families. The Levy family adopted Edgar and he took their name.

Edgar married Corrine Cohn in 1946. Edgar had a business in Hamilton called Piston Service, which was a wholesaler for car parts. Corrine drove a truck for this business and eventually became the bookkeeper for another firm. After marriage, they lived in Hamilton at 18 West Third.

Nancy had two younger siblings: Ann (1956–) and Lois (1958–2018). She married Wayne Greenberg in 1979 and they divorced around 1985. She studied medical lab technology at a community college and worked at various hospitals and businesses, including Henderson Hospital in Hamilton and Baycrest.

Scope and Content

This sub-series consists of thirty-six negatives and four prints taken by Sylvia Schwartz of the family at leisure. It is made up of seven files. The majority of the images are of the family relaxing at their cottage in Bobcaygeon. Images consist of photographs of the family on the lawn, in the cottage and on the lake. There are both candid and staged photographs.

Images from the cottage consist of staged family photographs on the lawn from 1941, candid and staged photographs from ca. 1955 and images of little girls (Jan Shleser and Judith Wolfson) playing outside from ca. 1955.

Family members featured include Gertrude, Joseph, Ruth, Jack and Jewell Schwartz, Helen, Isaac, Jill and Jan Shleser and Fanny, Alex, Herbert, Carol and Gary Solway. As well as, the Hausser, Halbert and Wintrob families. Family friends are also in the images. Individuals include Judith Wolfson, Frances and David Gruber and David Rotenberg and his brothers. Sylvia Schwartz is in some images.

There is one print that is a view of the cottage from the lake and one print of Herbert Solway reading the newspaper in bed with his son Gary that may or may not have been taken at the cottage. Sub-series is arranged at the file level. Files are organized chronologically by date.

Admin History/Bio

Nathan Farb was one of the first Jews to arrive and settle in Pontypool, which was a popular summer resort spot for vacationing Jews from the 1940s until the 1960s. The area was relatively inexpensive and had a pond as its swimming spot. Kosher meals would often be brought in for the vacationers who arrived on two trains daily from Union Station.

Custodial History

The original photographs were loaned to the archives for copying in 2005. They were subsequently returned to the donor.

Fonds consists of twenty-one copy photographs of the Farb family as well as the Bernsteins, Crystals, and other Jewish families who lived and owned resorts in the Pontypool area.

Joseph Gary and Goldie Gary (née Lawrence) married in 1921 in Rochester, New York. Shortly thereafter they moved to Toronto. Joseph and Goldie had three children: daughters Ethel (Halter) and Shirley (Cohen) and son Leslie. In 1950, after three years of visiting the region, Joseph and Goldie purchased a home on Amelia Street in Pontypool, Ontario. As the area was a popular summer resort spot for vacationing Jews from the 1940s to the 1960s, Joseph and Goldie decided to build ten cottages on their land for rental, which they named Gary's Cottages. The cottages were sold around 1970 and are no longer in existence; however, their home is still standing.

The original photographs were loaned to the archives for copying and were subsequently returned to the donor.
