Admin History/Bio
The Weizmann Institute of Science is one of the world’s leading multidisciplinary basic research institutions in the natural and exact sciences. It is located in Rehovot, Israel, just south of Tel Aviv. It was initially established as the Daniel Sieff Institute in 1934, by Israel and Rebecca Sieff of London in memory of their son Daniel. In 1949, it was renamed for Dr. Chaim Weizmann, the first President of the State of Israel and Founder of the Institute.
Scope and Content
Series consists of 29 audio reels containing Spotlight On Science segment, presented by Zelda Young, broadcast by CHIN Radio on Wednesdays. The segment deals with scientific innovations and researches conducted at the Weizmann Institute of Science.

Landmarks

The Labour Zionist Order was an outgrowth of the Labour Zionist party in Israel (the Mapai party). They carried out a number of different functions. They were pro-labour and pro-Zionist. They acted as a mutual benefit society—the Labour Zionist Alliance or Farband, formally known as the Jewish National Workers Alliance or Farband Labour Zionist Order. They also operated a school for children called the Farband Folks Shule (later Bialik Hebrew Day School). There was a fundraising organization that they oversaw called the Israel Histadrut of Toronto whose annual campaign raised money for the Israel Histadrut in Israel (the Federation of Labour in Israel), founded in 1920. The campaign money was used to fund economic, trade union, military, social, and cultural activities in Israel, as well as to provide a comprehensive system of health insurance and hospital services to workers. The Israel Histadrut campaign in Toronto had an autonomous executive board, however it's activities were overseen by the Labour Zionist Order.

Item consists of a Spotlight On Science recording, the second part of an interview with Dr. Ruth Sky, conducted by Bill Stern. Dr. Sky was a family physician, Associate Professor at the Department of Family and Community Medicine of the University of Toronto, a physician at the Toronto General Hospital and Riverdale Hospital, and a member of the Toronto Dysautonomia Foundation. She talks about dysautonomia, which, according to her, is a genetic condition that affects primarily Jewish people and is characterized by abnormalities in the autonomic nervous system. Item consists of a Spotlight On Science recording. Bill Stern hosts the first part of a conversation between Dr. Allan Gordon, from Mount Sinai Hospital, in Toronto, and Professor Nathan Trainin, from the Weizmann Institute of Science, in Israel. Dr. Gordon introduces Professor Trainin and the ninth Joseph J. Schiffer visiting professor in oncology as part of a partnership between Mount Sinai Hospital and various institutions in Israel. Professor Trainin talks about his impressions of Toronto and Mount Sinai Hospital compared to a visit 10 years prior. He then discusses the cancer research being conducted at the Weizmann Institute of Science and the several different types of cancer treatment.

Zelda Young interviews Minnie Ross, PR for the Weizmann Institute of Science and executive director of the Weizmann League, about research being conducted at the Weizmann Institute on different types of cancer, which is the largest single comprehensive enterprise at the campus. According to her, experiments are being conducted to understand how cancers are iniciated and develop, how they can be detected, and how they can be treated. She also mentions different new treatments being investigated by the institute.

Item consists of a Spotlight On Science recording. Zelda Young and David Andrews interview newly-appointed Executive Director of the Canadian Society for the Weizmann Institute, Adam Cahoon. Born and raised in South Africa, he moved to Israel to do his master's in Communications at the Hebrew University. Then, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he lived for five years and worked with the Joint Israel Appeal of Great Britain and Jewish Solidarity, before returning to Israel. He then moved back to South Africa, where he became the Campaign Director of the United Jewish Appeal, before returning once more to Israel to work with Keren Hayesod. Finally, he resettled in Toronto, where he became Campaign Director of the United Jewish Appeal. He talks about his roles as Executive Director, which include fund raising, assisting the Weizmann Institute in assuming a leadership role, informing the public about the work being conducted at the institute, assuring scholarships and exchange with other research institutions and the scientific community, among other organizational roles.
