Hilary Grossman (b.1922) was born in Ostowiec, Poland, to Saloman and Balbina (née Haberfeld). Before the Holocaust, he worked as a cook. He was taken to Dachau in 1944 and, after the war, was living in the Feldafing displace persons camp in Germany.
Scope and Content
File consists of a letter from Hilary Grossman to Max Hartstone, dated 1 December 1946. In this letter, Hilary expresses his gratitude for documents received and requests material aid. He inquires about Max's family and provides an update on his son. File also contains a typed translation.

(e.g. notifying Toronto police of his absence, rerouting The Jewish Morning Journal, gardening services); a letter from Toronto G'millath Chasidim Association contacting Katz as guarantor or a loan; correspondence concerning properties owned by Katz (e.g. rent owning, property assessment, utilities, purchase of property in Bronte, ON in 1931, notice from the Department of Buildings requesting a repair of a chimney, insurance); a postcard in Yiddish; a personal letter of thanks from Samuel Factor, M.P.; a bill of sale for plumbing supplies; birthday greetings; correspondence with Horowitz Bros. & Margareten concerting information regarding the Customs Division of Canada and correspondence sent form Poland (e.g. a copy of a marriage certificate written in Hebrew and Yiddish, a wedding invitation) and miscellaneous correspondence in Yiddish. File consists of two letters. The first, dated November 6th, 1918, is a letter from Edmund Scheuer's brother, Benno, to Jessica (Jessie) Bloom, his daughter-in-law, congratulating her on just having learned of her marriage on Novermber 3rd, 1918, to Isadore Scheuer. The second, dated February 23rd, 1959, is a letter from Edith M. Butt, 15 Minto Place, Toronto, to Edmund Scheuer Ltd. Mrs. Butt was a customer of the store and was writing to thank Scheuer's for her diamond engagement ring purchased thirty-five years earlier.
Physical Condition
Fragile.
Ink has started to create holes in the paper of the letter from 1918.

Included are his registration cards of the Association of Professional Engineers (1966-2010), a permit and a membership card issued by the Toronto and District Film Council (1960-1961), a University of Toronto library card (1967), two identification cards of the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (1972), a course completion certificate of an evening course at Ryerson issued by Ontario Department of Education, and a voting membership card of the St. Christopher House (1976).
