Joseph and Gertrude Schwartz were respectively born in the United States and Austria. They had four daughers, Sylvia, Helen, Fanny and Ruth. Joseph was a furier who eventually set up his own business, J. Schwartz & Co. Ltd., a fur manufacturing company on Madison Avenue. He later became a partner in the Park Plaza Hotel on Avenue Road. His daughter Fanny married Alex Solway and had two children, Herbert and Carol.

Herbert Solway received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto in 1953 and a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1955. He was called to the Bar in 1957. Herbert was a founding member of Goodmans LLP, joining the firm in 1955. He has played a significant role in helping build the foundation of the firm, serving as its chair from 1980 to 1992. He served as a Chariman until 1994 and Partner until 1998. He continues to serve as Counsel to Goodmans. He was appointed to the Queen's Counsel in 1968.

Herbert has also been a Director of Gluskin Sheff and Associates Inc. since May 2006. He is a Director of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and a Founding director of the Tarragon Theatre Company. He was a Founding director of Sun Media Corporation, as well as a Director of John Labatt Ltd.

Carol Solway is the daughter of Alex and Fanny Solway, brother of Herbert Solway and the niece of Sylvia Schwartz.

Gary Solway was born in 1957 and is the eldest son of Herbert Solway and Elaine Solway (née Basin) and the great-nephew of Sylvia Schwartz. He began his Bachelor of Commerce at Queen's University in 1976, completeing three years there and then finishing the degree in 1981, after doing his first year of a Bachelor of Laws at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University in 1979-1980. He completed his Bachelor of Laws at the University of Toronto in 1983.

Gary was a Partner with Torys LLP firm from 1983 to 2006 until becoming the Co-Head of the Bennett Jones LLP firm's Private Equity Group and Managing Partner of the Technology, Media and Entertainment Group.

Gary speaks frequently at conferences on topics related to financing of technology businesses. A regular writer, he contributed a number of chapters to Directors' Duties in Canada, 5th Edition, published in Canada by CCH Canadian Limited in 2012, and the Ontario Corporations Law Guide, published in Canada by CCH Canadian Limited. Gary is also the secretary of the CVCA, Canada's venture capital and private equity association.

Herbert Solway received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto in 1953 and a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1955. He was called to the Bar in 1957. Herbert was a founding member of Goodmans LLP, joining the firm in 1955. He has played a significant role in helping build the foundation of the firm, serving as its chair from 1980 to 1992. He served as a Chariman until 1994 and Partner until 1998. He continues to serve as Counsel to Goodmans. He was appointed to the Queen's Counsel in 1968.

Fanny Solway (née Schwartz) was the daughter of Joseph Schwartz and Gertrude Schwartz and the sister of Sylvia Schwartz. She was married to Alex Solway (d. 1 July 1988) and had two children, Carol and Herbert. She had three grandchildren, Gary, Diane, and Michael. She died on 22 April 1971.

The Fanny Solway Award is a University of Toronto Faculty of Law bursary set up by Fanny's family after her death to be given to a first-year student that has obtained standing in pre-law studies satisfactory to the council and who satisfies the council of capacity to be an outstanding law student and demonstrates financial need.

Helen married Dr. Isaac Shleser, a doctor of internal medicine, and had two daughters, Gillian and Jan. Fanny married Alex Solway and had two children, Herbert and Carol. Ruth was a respected book seller in Toronto. Unlike her siblings, Sylvia was a dwarf, who led a successful life despite her physical limitations. She became a prominent portrait photographer in Toronto and owned a studio on Grenville Road. In 1976 Sylvia set up a special children's book award to honour her late sister Ruth. In 2004, six years after Sylvia's death, her family changed the name of the award to the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children's Book Awards.

Gary is also the secretary of the CVCA, Canada's venture capital and private equity association.

Gertrude Schwartz was married to Joseph Schwartz and had four daughters, Sylvia, Fanny, Helen and Ruth.

Herbert Solway received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto in 1953 and a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1955. He was called to the Bar in 1957. Herbert was a founding member of Goodmans LLP, joining the firm in 1955. He has played a significant role in helping build the foundation of the firm, serving as its chair from 1980 to 1992. He served as a Chariman until 1994 and Partner until 1998. He continues to serve as Counsel to Goodmans. He was appointed to the Queen's Counsel in 1968.

Herbert has also been a Director of Gluskin Sheff and Associates Inc. since May 2006. He is a Director of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and a Founding director of the Tarragon Theatre Company. He was a Founding director of Sun Media Corporation, as well as a Director of John Labatt Ltd. He is married to Ann Shortell.

Fanny (née Schwartz) Solway was the sister of Sylvia Schwartz. She was married to Alex Solway (d. 1 July 1988) and had two children, Carol and Herbert. She had three grandchildren, Gary, Diane and Michael. She died on 22 April 1971.

Ruth Schwartz was the daughter of Joseph and Gertrude Schwartz, and had three sisters, Sylvia, Fanny and Helen.

A respected Toronto bookseller, the Ruth Schwartz Children’s Book Award was established in 1976 by Sylvia Schwartz in her honour. In 2004, the Schwartz family renamed the award the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children's Book Awards. The administration of this award is shared by the Ontario Arts Council which selects the juries, the Ontario Arts Council Foundation and the Canadian Booksellers Association, whose members select the short list of books.

In 1976 Sylvia Schwartz set up a special children's book award to honour her late sister Ruth. David Rotenberg was born in Toronto on 24 July 1930 and educated at the University of Toronto. He worked as an insurance agent, and served on Toronto City Council and Metro Toronto Council from 1961 to 1972. In the 1972 election he ran for mayor, and lost to David Crombie in a close, three-way race. Rotenberg was later appointed as a commissioner on the Toronto Transit Commission, and served from 1975 to 1977. He first campaigned for the Ontario legislature in the 1975 provincial election, and finished second against Liberal Vern Singer in Wilson Heights. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1977 to 1985 as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party, and was briefly a cabinet minister in the government of Frank Miller. Rotenberg attempted a return to politics and campaigned for the Canadian House of Commons in the 1997 federal election as a candidate of the Progressive Conservatives in the riding of Eglinton—Lawrence, losing to incumbent Liberal Joe Volpe.

Rotenberg has been named as an honorary officer in the Canadian Jewish Congress.

This photo is taken outside the entrance of Ysaÿe's home. Gingold and Solway are arm in arm and posturing jovially. The word written across the gate is "la chanterelle", which is the colloquial name for the highest string on the violin (the E string).

The photo is taped with transparent tape at the top and has been written upon the back in pencil. An earlier message appears to have been erased from under the newer identifying inscription.

Accession consists of two bound srapbooks documenting the political and communal life of Herbert Orliffe. Included are newsclippings and official invitations to ceremonies and events.

Administrative History

Herbert Orliffe (1905-1967) was a QC barrister and solicitor who owned his own practice, Herbert Orliffe QC. He specialized in labour law and was the first Chairman of the Ontario Jurisdictional Disputes Commission. He was born on May 5, 1905 to Anne and Charles Orliffe in Newcastle, England. Herbert married Ida Goren and they had four children: Annabel, Joan, Barbara and Robert. His affiliations included: Jewish Public Library, Canadian Jewish News, Jewish Welfare Fund, Board of Jewish Education, Beth Tzedec Congregation, Sunnyside Lodge IOOF, Palestine Lodge AF & AM, Toronto Board of Trade, and the Empire Club. Herbert was also the first Jewish Chairman of the Toronto Board of Education in 1952, an alderman for Ward Four in 1954, and a member of Municipality Toronto Council in 1956. He died suddently of a heart attack in 1967.

Scope and Content

The accession consists of 47 photographs documenting the Pascowitz and Grossman families.

Custodial History

The records were sent to the OJA by Debby Shocket at the JAHSENA archives in Edmonton. She received them from an individual who picked them up at a garage sale and didn't know which family they documented. Debby could see they were from Toronto and asked if we would like them. A number of the original images were given to the donor, since he didn't have many photographs of his family and they were similar to other images in this donation.

Administrative History

Gimpel (Yacob) and Rivka Pascowitz came to Canada from Poland in 1903 and 1905 respectively. He arrived first to set up residence and then sent for his wife and seven children a couple years later. Their last child, Morris, was born in Toronto in 1907. They lived at 138 Elizabeth Street in the Ward. Gimpel ran a delicatessen below their home and served as Gabbai of Beth Jacob Congregation on Henry Street. Their son Charles was born around 1900. He enlisted in the Royal Fusilliers, where he served as a sapper in Egypt during the First World War. His regiment was part of the Jewish Legion. When he returned he worked for Canadian National as a telegraph operator transmitting messages in Morse code.

The Grossman daughters, Anna (m. Pascowitz), Ruth (m. Godfrey) and Esther, arrived from Galicia in June 1921. The family sent the three eldest girls to Toronto after their grandfather had been murdered during a pogrom in the spring of 1921. At that time they were 21, 19 and 20 respectively. They stayed with their aunt, Annie (Grossman), and uncle Charles Goodman, who lived at 190 Seaton Street. Esther found a job as a fur finisher with J. Schwartz & Co. on Queen Street West. She later worked for Schipper, Freifeld furriers on Spadina Avenue. Anne located a job at the Biltmore Hat Factory. Ruth trained as a bookkeeper and found a job with Okun Brothers Ltd., millinery manufacturers on York Street. The rest of the family, including their parents Moses and Rose, arrived many years later. Their brother, David Grossman, immigrated to Toronto in February 1927 and found work as an upholsterer. Their parents, Moses and Rose, came three years later in March 1930 with the youngest child Rivkah (m. Agranove).They lived with Anne after their arrival and later moved in with their unmarried daughters and resided at 490 Euclid Avenue. Moses died in 1939 and Rose in 1972.

Charles Pascowitz and Anna Grossman married in Toronto on 8 February 1925. The couple had two children: Gilbert (b. 1925) and Herbert (b. 1927). The family moved to the east end of Toronto during the 1930s after Charlie lost his job with the CNR. They lived at 340 Kingston Road and opened a grocery store on the ground floor. Charlie was active in the Beach shul and served as a voluntary Hazzan, leading services. The kids attended Norway Public School. During his youth, Herb worked as a delivery boy for a grocery store. He later became a lifeguard as a later teen at B'nai Brith Camp and Camp Kitonim at Balfour Beach. Both boys served in the ROTC during the Second World War. Herbert attended the University of Toronto and completed his BSc in 1949 and his medical degree in 1953. He became a psychiatrist. Gilbert attended the University of Toronto as well and later interned in New York and became a pediatrician. He married Sandra Posen and the couple settled in Brantford. They had five children.

Herbert married his first wife Shirley Weinberg. She later changed her first name to Eve. The couple had four boys: Jonathan (b. 1954), Ron (b. 1957), Andrew (b. 1962) and Dan (b. 1964). They moved to Edmonton. After the couple divorced in 1975, Eve and the boys returned to Toronto. Herbert married Marilyn Berg in 1977.

Charlie Pascoe passed away in December 1970 and Anne several years later in March of 1977.

Accession consists of material documenting Herbert Goldstein. Included is Herbert's typed, first-hand account of his experience being in Berlin during Kristallnacht. According to Herbert's friend Larry Mogelonsky, Herbert wrote down his account in 1992.

Custodial History

Larry Mogelonsky was a friend of Herbert Goldstein and donated Herbert's account to the Ontario Jewish Archives after his friend's death.

Administrative History

Herbert Goldstein lived in Montreal and moved to Toronto circa 2000. He passed away on 17 April 2012.

Herbert's obituary was published in the Toronto Star on 19 April 2012. The obituary records the following information: "Herbert Goldstein, beloved husband of Sheba. Loving father and father-in-law of Debra Goldstein and David Cohen, and Earl Stuart and the late Lisa Goldstein. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Edward and Susan Goldstein, and Lynda Gould. Devoted grandfather of Jacob, and Sophie Cohen, and Jessica and Matthew Stuart."

Jack Schwartz was Sylvia Schwartz's uncle, and was married to Minnie Schwartz. Their daughter Jewell owned an art gallery in Yorkville for many years. Jack was in the fur business in Toronto.

Jewell Schwartz was the daughter of Jack and Minnie Schwartz, and was Sylvia Schwartz's cousin.

In 1955, Jewell opened an upscale craft retail store called Trade Winds at 150 Bloor Street West. In 1963 she relocated the store to 138 Cumberland Street in Yorkville, due to the previous building being torn down. Trade Winds remained at this location until her retirement in 1984. Jewell was known to take courses in the construction of the wares she sold, such as jewelry and pottery to have a better idea of the materials she was selling.

Ida Schwartz was the sister of Jack and Joseph Schwartz.

Admin History/Bio

Gary Solway was born in 1957 and is the eldest son of Herbert Solway and Elaine Solway (née Basin) and the great-nephew of Sylvia Schwartz. He began his bachelor of commerce at Queen's University in 1976, completeing three years there and then finishing the degree in 1981, after doing his first year of a bachelor of laws at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University in 1979–1980. He completed his bachelor of laws at the University of Toronto in 1983.

Gary was a partner with Torys LLP firm from 1983 to 2006 until becoming the co-head of the Bennett Jones LLP firm's private equity group and managing partner of the technology, media, and entertainment group.

Gary speaks frequently at conferences on topics related to financing of technology businesses. A regular writer, he contributed a number of chapters to Directors' Duties in Canada, 5th Edition, published in Canada by CCH Canadian Limited in 2012, and the Ontario Corporations Law Guide, published in Canada by CCH Canadian Limited. Gary is also the secretary of the CVCA, Canada's venture capital and private equity association.

Admin History/Bio

Maurice Solway was a prominent Toronto violinist. He studied violin with Eugène Ysaÿe in Brussels from 1926 to 1928. He also wrote and lectured about music and worked as a violin teacher. He was married to Anne Cass, the niece of Sarah Levine. “Dorothy,” to whom the inscription on the photo is made, was likely his sister-in-law, either Dorothy Cass (Garfield's wife) or Dorothy Sandler (Anne's sister).

Scope and Content

This photograph is a portrait of Maurice Solway holding his violin. It was taken in 1926 at a photo studio in Toronto when Maurice was approximately 27 years of age.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of approximately 3000 portrait negatives and prints taken by Sylvia Schwartz. The photographs depict members of the Jewish community, jazz musicians, and a small number of non-Jews as well. Within each box, the records are divided up into envelopes, which include anywhere from one to twenty negatives and occasionally a small number of prints.

Custodial History

The negatives were in the possession of Herb Solway, Sylvia Schwartz's nephew until they were donated to the Archives.

Administrative History

Sylvia Schwartz was born in 1914 in Toronto. Her parents were Joseph and Gertrude, who were respectively born in the United States and Austria. She had two older sisters, Fannie and Rosetta (Ruth). Her family moved to Toronto around 1903. Joseph was a furier who eventually set up his own business, J. Schwartz & Co. Ltd., a fur manufacturing company on Madison Avenue. He later became a partner in the Park Plaza Hotel on Avenue Road. Unlike her siblings, Sylvia was a dwarf, who led a successful life despite her physical limitations. She became a prominent portrait photographer in Toronto and owned a studio on Grenville Road. She began her career during the 1940s, capturing images of families, servicemen during the war as well as brides. She eventually carved out a niche for herself mid-career, specializing in children's portraiture. In addition to her professional activities, she was also recognized for her commitment to Communism. She befriended many famous American artists who were supporters of the cause, such as Paul Robeson, Duke Ellington, Lena Horne and Cab Caloway, travelling across the border frequently to attend meetings and work with her American comrades. In 1976 she set up a special children's book award to honour her late sister Ruth, who was a respected Toronto bookseller. In 2004, six years after Sylvia's death, her family changed the name of the award to the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children's Book Awards. The awards are administered by the Ontario Arts Council which selects the school and juries. The Ontario Arts Foundation, the Schwartz Foundation and the Canadian Booksellers Association, in turn, are responsible for producing the shortlist of books for the jury.
