- Noted brothers, Nat and Lou Turofsky, began taking photos in 1907. They photographed wedding banquets, social and public events, and celebrities, but were mostly known for their sports photography and quickly established themselves as the premier photographers in the sporting world. Their diverse hockey photographs truly captured the essence of the game, all of which chronicled the Original Six era.
- Lou Turofsky was born in 1892 in Chicago to Russian immigrant parents. The family moved to Toronto in 1900, and Lou began work as a photographer at Alexandra Studios in 1907. In 1910, he bought the business and in 1911, he hired his brother Nat to work with him. While Nat never married, Lou married Ruth Seigel in 1936, at the age of forty-five, and had two daughters, Carol (m. Grafstein) and Riki, who is now an opera singer.
- Nat and Lou Turofsky were perhaps the most famous sports photographers of the 1940s and 1950s, due in part to their contract as the official photographers of Maple Leaf Gardens from the 1930s until the mid-1950s. They also photographed baseball games for the Toronto Maple Leaf baseball club.
- Nat and Lou Turofsky died in 1956 and 1959 respectively.
- Scope and Content
- This series consists of eighteen photographs taken by the Turofsky brothers from the late 1940s up until 1974. The photographs depict members of the sports community in Toronto, including athletes, managers, newscasters, and reporters, as well as international athletes and celebrities such as Herb Elliot, Danny Kaye, Phil Silvers, and Liberace. Many of the photographs feature Spencer "Spiff" Evans, who was the publicity chief for the Maple Leaf Gardens during the 1940s and 1950s and, in 1963, became the director of public relations for the Toronto Maple Leafs baseball club.
- The series has been arranged and described at the item level.

- Bill Stern's father, Moishe (Morris) Shternshis (ca. 1893-1976), was born in Lagov, Poland, the son of Lebil and Rachel (Shedlovsky) Shternshis. He came to Canada in 1911, and upon his arrival, changed his surname to Stern. Bill Stern's mother, Fanny Rumianek (ca. 1896-1991), was born in Chmielnik, Poland, the daughter of Moishe Hamelech and Golda (Zimmerman) Rumianek. The family arrived in Canada in 1913. Moishe and Fanny met a few years later, and were married at the Ostrovtzer Synagogue on Cecil Street on 16 December, 1916. The couple moved to Hamilton in 1917, but later returned to Toronto.
- For over forty years, Moishe worked as a milkman. Beginning in 1921, he was the first Jewish independent milkman in Toronto. It was a profitable and successful venture for the Stern family, and as a result, Moishe founded a co-operative in 1944, with six other milkmen. Named the Alliance Dairy, the business was eventually bought by Borden's Creamery in 1966, and Moishe retired as a result. Fanny volunteered much of her time to organizations such as the Jewish Old Folks Home and Sunnybrook Hospital.
- The first child born to Moishe and Fanny was Max Stern (1918-1997), who eventually joined the army, married Ruth Soles, and had two daughters, Bonnie and Janie. Today, Bonnie is a well-known Canadian cook-book author. Bill was the second child, born in 1921.
- In 1923, Moishe brought his younger brother, Sam Stern (1912-1939), to Canada from Lagov, Poland. Although actually his uncle, Bill was raised knowing Sam as his brother. In 1933, Sam travelled to Palestine and founded the Ginosar Kibbutz, near Tibireus. He was killed six years later while on guard duty.
- Scope and Content

- Physical Description
- 1866 photographs : b&w, sepia and col. (199 negatives) ; 35 x 28 or smaller
- 3 cm of textual records
- 1 architectural drawing
- Custodial History
- Most of the photographs were in the custody of Ted Winick, who sat on the Jewish Community Centre Archives Committee. They were donated to the OJA in 1982 and 1984.
- Scope and Content
- This sub-series contains photographs collected by the Jewish Community Centre Archives Committee. The photographs document the executive and general membership, special events, sporting groups and teams, and YM-YWHA owned camps and properties, including the construction and completion program of the northern branch. There are also a small amount of textual records and an architectural drawing, which has been kept in the file with the accompanying graphic images.
- Arrangement of the photographs has been imposed by the archivist, as no original order existed when the records were acquired. The photos have been arranged into alphabetical files by function, where one exists, otherwise they have been grouped together by subject, event or individual. This approach was taken so that images pertaining to certain subjects or events could be easily accessed by the researcher. The images have been described at the file and item levels.
