- The Amalgamated Dawes Road Trustees (ADRT) is a non-profit body that was established in 1950. Its primary mandate has been to oversee and maintain the Dawes Road Cemetery. The Dawes Road Cemetery, established around 1903, was the third Jewish cemetery in Toronto. It is located on St. Clair Avenue in Scarborough, Toronto. As the administering body of the Dawes Road Cemetery, the ADRT was responsible for maintaining the grounds, fixing and straightening monuments, and beautifying the surroundings. All funds that the ADRT received are spent on the maintenance of the cemetery. In 1953, at the request of Beth Tzedec Congregation after the merger of its two predecessor congregations, the ADRT took over the responsibility of managing the Jones Avenue Cemetery as well.
- Previously, ADRT reported to the Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC) but was an autonomous entity with independent decision-making powers. Although the trustees of the ADRT are often drawn from the congregations and societies who own plots at the aforementioned two cemeteries, there were also representatives from the CJC and the United Jewish Welfare Fund of Toronto during the early years.
- The ADRT office was originally located at 150 Beverley Street and was later relocated to 3169 St. Clair Avenue East, closer to the Dawes Road Cemetery.
- Currently, there are thirty-four organizations that possessed cemetery plots at Dawes Road Cemetery. Some of the larger and more prominent ones include the Kiever, Beth Tzedec, Temple Sinai, Beth Emeth, Beth David, the Toronto Hebrew Benevolent Society, Zion Benevolent Society, and the United Jewish People's Order.
- Scope and Content
- Series consists of records documenting the operational activities of the Amalgamated Dawes Road Trustees. Included are minutes and agendas of general meetings.
