- The Combined Youth Appeal was a fundraising arm of the United Jewish Appeal campaign that encompassed the many youth groups in the city. A staff person at the YM-YWHA was appointed to coordinate the fundraising and educational efforts of the campaign, in consultation with UJA staff. Each organization conducted its own campaign and programs to meet its desired targets. The groups were divided into divisions, which elected representatives to the Combined Youth Appeal cabinet. The cabinet acted as a liaison between the Combined Youth Appeal and the United Jewish Appeal.
- Scope and Content
- This file contains textual records relating to the Combined Youth Appeal campaign. This includes meeting minutes and reports, correspondence and promotional material. There are also meeting minutes from groups within the Combined Youth Appeal structure, namely the sorority and fraternity division.

- Admin History/Bio
- Hadassim Youth Village was conceived and planned by the members of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO during the Second World War. In December 1944, the first furrow was plowed on a Jewish National Fund tract close to malaria-infested swampland near Natanya in the Sharon region. A master architectural plan was prepared in that year, and three years later during the 1947-48 school year, a residential education centre opened for children orphaned or left homeless during the Holocaust.
- Fifty Hungarian and Polish orphans were soon joined by fifty “Sabra” children, for even then, the goal was to integrate as well as educate. From the beginning, Hadassim’s philosophy has been to serve children who are in distress or underachievers, because of family disfunction, behavioral, or cultural issues. Many pupils are new immigrants from such countries as the former Soviet Union, Iran, and Ethiopia.
- Four dormitories, a dining hall, and kitchen were the first buildings constructed, and an Arab orange grove was acquired as the first agricultural property. Through the years, the campus of one hundred acres has grown to include primary, junior and senior high schools with upwards of one thousand day students, five hundred residential students, and a staff of over two hundred. There are a dozen student dormitories, housing units for employees and their families, an amphitheatre and performance hall, a synagogue, medical facilities, technical workshops, gymnasium, swimming pool, offices, and many other facilities. The management of the village is directed by the Schools Department of World WIZO, with the involvement of the Israel Ministry of Education and the Youth Aliyah Department of the Jewish Agency.
- In order to maximize the use of facilities, the village operates summer camp programs for the children of wounded soldiers, children in distress or from large families, and students visiting from Jewish schools in the diaspora.
- In the 1970s, Hadassim and WIZO Baby Services extended their mandate to build crèches (day care centres) for children from one month to four years. These facilities are located in all areas of Israel.
- In 1994 Hadassim and Day Care Centres campaign became known as WIZO Services. This “umbrella” of projects includes the Hadassim Children and Youth Village, other schools, day care centres, women and youth clubs, and “Women for Women” services for battered women.
- Other Village initiatives include guest accommodations, and special programs for underprivileged or academically-challenged children from the local area. A proactive public relations campaign attracts much media attention and visitors to Hadassim. Canadian chapters of Hadassah –WIZO continue to provide major funding for the village.
- Scope and Content
- The series consists of 1 photograph and textual records, documenting the history of Hadassim Youth Village and Hadassim and WIZO Baby Services in Israel (now known as WIZO Services) from the 1950s to1999.
- Included are executive and committee lists, executive and donor correspondence, press clippings, reports, histories, flyers, case histories of students, as well as information about “Women for Women” and Baby Creche and Kindergarten Services.
- Major fund raising initiatives such as raffle draws, auction and party events (1970-1989), Famous People Players, and "Lend Your Heart to Hadassim" are documented by invitations, programs, tickets, and publicity.
- The records are arranged by function, such as the history of Hadassim, publicity, correspondence, committee lists, and documentation of fund raising activities.

- In late 1947 and early 1948 representatives of the Canadian garment industry organized what became known as the Tailor Project, an immigration program planned to select more than 2,200 skilled tailors from the Displaced Person camps of Europe, facilitate their immigration, and give them jobs in the garment trade and housing in Canada. The Tailor Project was based on similar schemes that had alleviated labour shortages in the logging and mining industries. Canadian Jewish Congress, eager to rescue Holocaust survivors from the DP camps, knew the government would approve a plan to bring in skilled workers to fill a shortage in the garment trades. Recognizing the plan had to come from within the garment industry itself, Congress provided guidance from behind the scenes.
- The Tailor Project was the first program that permitted large numbers of Jewish adults to immigrate to Canada following the Second World War. More than half of the immigrants were Jewish. Max E. Enkin (men's clothing), Max Federman (fur workers), Joe Mack and others were sent by the Commission to Europe as part of the selection team. Provided they had the requisite skills, both single and married displaced persons were eligible to come to Canada.
- Hundreds of tailoring firms in Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg and Vancouver were canvassed and many agreed to hire DP workers on 12-month contracts. The Canadian Overseas Commission, the industry's co-coordinating body, had to ensure proper housing for the expected workers. In response to Max Enkin's emphasis on providing accommodation, many individuals and community organizations reached out to those in need. Under the direction of the United Jewish Relief Agency, the office of the Canadian Overseas Garment Commission attended to the many and varying needs of the immigrant tailors, both Jewish and non-Jewish. In addition to providing financial assistance, the Commission gave attention to problems of landlord-tenant relationships, hospital, medical and dental care, gave direction and made referrals to other agencies for specialized services and co-operated with other organizations in their programs for immigrants.
- The Tailor Project became the template for the Furrier Project that followed and spurred the formation in 1947 of the Jewish Vocational Service of Toronto, the original purpose of which was to help survivors of the Holocaust find employment.
- Scope and Content
- Series consists of the operational records of the Canadian Overseas Garment Commission. Records include agreements between garment industry manufacturers (employers) and employees, immigration records and passenger lists, general correspondence relating to the operation of the program, financial records, employee payroll records, contact and membership lists, the Canadian Overseas Garment Commission Toronto program report, statistical summaries, employee certificates of merit, discharge certificates, meeting minutes of the Toronto Program Steering Committee, employee worker cards and employee housing records. Also included is a hand drawn map locating the Jewish Immigrant Aid Society of Canada at 455 Spadina Ave., Toronto, circa 1947.
