Administrative History
CONTACT/USSR was an organization affiliated with the Canadian Jewish Congress founded at the University of Toronto, and supported by many academics. The aim of the organization was to establish and maintain written contact with "Refuseniks" and "Prisoners of Conscience" in the USSR and to lobby the Canadian government to persuade the Soviet autorities to permit unhampered emigration of Soviet Jews.

Biography
Frank was born on 4 January 1916 in Toronto. His parents were Charles Schleifer and Mary Schleifer (née Noble). At the age of three, his family moved to Sturgeon Falls, Ontario. In 1922, the family moved to Brantford, Ontario, where his mother's family lived. Frank left school at age sixteen to work at the family Cigar and Soda Fountain store when his father became ill. He opened Frank’s Billiard Parlour from 1941 to 1946. He was drafted into the army in 1943, where he served in the artillery and infantry. He started to work in Unemployment Insurance with the federal government. Frank married Bertha (née Moldaver) in 1937. They had one son, Charles, born in 1947. As a youth, Frank was involved with AZA (B'nai Brith youth organization). He was a member of B'nai Brith and served on the executive of the synagogue in Brantford.

Accession consists of textual records documenting the fundraising and planning activities for the Reena Community Residence on the Joseph and Wolf Lebovic Jewish Community Campus. Also included are records documenting the opening ceremonies for the residence, including invitations, newspaper clippings, and programs. Finally, accession includes one Israeli stamp that was issued to celebrate 25 years of UJA in 1962.

Accession consists of 5 photographs, a letter from Joan Sutton to Frank Laurie speaking about Nat Laurie's positive influence on her life and newsclippings. The photographs include a panoramic of a Dress Manufacturers Guild banquet (194-) featuring Nat Laurie at the head table in front of the microphone. Also identified are Sam, Abe and Joseph Posluns. Other photographs include images of Emma Laurie with daughter Marilyn and Emma's much younger half-sister Annie Pion Steinberg, a portrait of Emma Steinberg (ca. 1934) and one of Nat and Emma around the time of their wedding (ca. 1937) as well as a group photo of Marilyn Laurie at Camp Arowhon (ca. 1949-1950). Also identified in this photograph is Ruthie Silver.
Administrative History
Nathan (Nat) Laurie (ca. 1904-1958) was born around 1904 in Montreal, Quebec. He married Emma (nee Steinberg) (1914-1997) around 1937 after a brief courtship. Together they had one son, Frank and one daughter, Marilyn (m. Baker). Nat owned Nat Laurie Dresses at Spadina Avenue and Richmond Street in Toronto and was president of the Dress Manufacturers Guild. Notably, he was in charge of fabric allocations during the Second World War and provided a dress to the winner of the Miss Toronto pageant. In 1951, he opened the Zanzibar night club on Yonge Street as a live blues and jazz club. Nat died in 1958.

Scope and Content
Accession consists of photographs and oral history interviews created as part of the Prosserman JCC's Intergenerational Oral History Program. Interviews were conducted by CHAT and CHAR grade 9 students with seniors about their memories growing up in Toronto, particularly in the Kensington Market area. Clips from many of the interviews were used in the film, Shtetl in the City, which was created by the Prosserman JCC. The photographs depict the seniors with the students who interviewed them.
