- Biography
- Fay Gardner (née Haber) was born in Toronto in December 1896. Her parents came from Austria. They met and married in New York and moved to Toronto in about 1894. As a child, Fay's family lived on King Street, LaPlante Avenue, and Walton Street. She attended Elizabeth Street School (later Hester How Public School) and Wellesley Public School. At the age of sixteen, Fay and her family moved to Margueretta Street. She got married at age eighteen.

- St. John's Ward, popularly known as "the Ward", was an area in Toronto bounded by Queen Street to the south, Yonge Street to the east, College Street to the north, and University Avenue to the west. The Ward was considered to be one of the poorest and unhealthiest areas in the city.
- By the turn of the 20th Century, the majority of the Ward's inhabitants were Eastern European Jewish immigrants, who took up residence in the small stuccoed frame cottages dating from the 1850s and 1860s. Initially, settlers chose the Ward because of the need for inexpensive accomodations close to the central business district where employment was available. However, later Jewish immigrants also settled in the Ward because previous settlers had reconstructed the amenities and the security of the shtetl.
- By 1911, the Ward was a self-contained community of Jewish services and facilities, supporting education, religious, social and business institutions. But with the influx to the area came a higher demand for housing and as a result, rents increased, congestion became alarmingly high and living conditions deteriorated. Many cottages housed three or four families, plus a workshop, in fewer than five rooms with no plumbing or drainage.
- By the onset of the First World War, civic and business development began encroaching on the residential area of the Ward and many Jewish residents began the move westward into the Kensington Market area. The war also brought with it greater opportunities for the small merchant and salvage trades and as the economic conditions of the immigrant improved, the confidence and expectations of the younger generation increased. By the end of the war, only a few Jewish residents remained in the Ward.
- Custodial History
- There is no information on the source or the acquisition of the images. The slides were probably used as part of a study and presentation on the conditions of the Ward and its immigrant inhabitants.
- Scope and Content
- This fonds consists of 15 images depicting Jewish life in the Ward and Jewish religious practices during Rosh Hashana. The 15 glass slides are the original images, while the 26 slides and 1 negative are copies that were probably made for presentation purposes.
- There are several images of Jewish children of the Ward, including one of Jewish newsboys, as well as two images of Jewish businesses, one streetscape and a typical St. John's Ward home. There are also several images depicting men and women engaged in the tradition/custom of Tashlich at theToronto waterfront on the first day of Rosh Hashana.

- Martha Soskin (née Cass) (1866-1946), Sarah Levine's sister, was married to George Soskin (b.1858), a storekeeper in Waubaushene, Ontario. George was born in Poland and had been previously married. Martha and George were already married when they immigrated to Canada in 1888, via the U.S., where their first child was born, in St. Louis, Missouri. They had as many as ten children: Isaac (1886-1976); Libby (m.Rothbart) (b.1888); Minnie “Hannah” (m.Rotenberg) (b.1891); Benjamin (1894); Beulah (m.Cole) (1896-1953); Sarah Mary (m.Mendel) (b.1898); Lobe Yente “Tesa” (m.Narrol) (b.1900); Abram Benjamin (b.1902); Aaron (b.1905); and “Ralph” Ruben (b.1907). The family moved from Waubaushene after 1901, and were listed as residents at 16 Lansdowne Ave. in the Toronto West region in the 1911 Census.
- Isaac married Channah Aungene Abramson (d.1979) in Saskatchewan in 1913. They lived in Los Angeles, where Isaac worked as a clothing merchant, and the couple later moved to San Francisco, where they lived until their deaths. Libby married Maurice Rothbart in 1912 and they moved to Chicago. Beulah married Al Cole in 1916, and the younger Soskin daughters, Sarah and Tesa, were both married in 1919, to Paul Mendel and Albert Narrol respectively. George retired and moved with Martha and the other adult children to Los Angeles, where Benjamin worked in the real estate business. The 1930 US Census record also lists Aaron, Tesa (then divorced), and her son, Albert Narrol (b.1921) as residing in the same Los Angeles household.
- Mary Levine (1895-1990), daughter of Moses and Sarah Levine, married Saul Soskin (d.1953), George Soskin's son from his first marriage. They lived in Toronto and later moved to Los Angeles. They had three children: Morton “Bud”, Estelle (b.1922), and Fred (1929-2000). Estelle was married to Irving Liss and worked as a secretary. They were married in Los Angeles in 1946 and lived in Toronto, while the other members of the family remained in California. Bud married Lee and had a son. Fred worked in production control for an aircraft company. He married Diane [?] and had four children: Scott, Christopher, Robin (m.Barnes), and Maria.

- The 1974 Walk for Israel was "a family affair" that attracted 5,000 participants, including a busload of students from Kingston. It took place on Sunday, 12 May. The route started at Lawrence and Bathurst, went downtown, and then north again to the BJCC. Walk pledges were collected on a per-mile basis, with money being collected after the walk took place.

- Item consists of Rabbi Witty's segment. He talks about the five days he spent in Chicago the prior month attending training sessions on computers and Jewish education, organized by the Morris Goldman Computer Department of the Associated Hebrew Schools of Chicago. According to him, the centre offered training for teachers and administrators of Jewish schools in the application of computer technology to Jewish education and to the harnessing of computer expertise for the benefit of the student in Jewish schools. He also talks about the activities conducter over the three years of existence of the Morris Goldman Computer Department and highlights parts of the program that interested him the most. Finally, he discusses the need to bring computers into Jewish Schools.

- Biography
- Charna Galper was born in 1921 in Bershet, Ukraine and immigrated with her family to Toronto in 1923. Charna grew up and lived in the Kensington Market area until 1955, when she moved north of the downtown core. Charna attended Landsdowne Public School and Harbord Collegiate, where she graduated as a legal secretary. She was a member of Hashomer Haztair and attended its summer camp at the Stroud, Ontario location. Charna married Abe Galper in 1947. Abe's career as a musician allowed them to travel to New York, Israel, and China. Charna has volunteered for Circle of Care and today spends her time pursuing her interest in Yiddish and attending programs at the Baycrest Centre.

Sponsored by Joe and Philip Finkler her mother’s brothers, the family arrived in Toronto in 1923. 3:24: Charna describes the living conditions of the family’s first home at 237 Beverley St., Fitzroy Terrace in the Kensington area and Grange Ave. 4:55: Charna talks about her elder sister’s contracting diphtheria and the resulting quarantine her family had to endure 5:2: Charna talks her parents first home at 210 Robert St. and the family’s move to Albany Ave. 6:15: Charna describes in detail the family’s living conditions prior to their move to 210 Robert St. 7:15: Charna talks about some of the challenges her parents faced when they first came to Toronto. The Perlmutar Bakery was opened in 1911 by Arrin Perlmutar who had immigrated to Canada from the Ukraine by way of London, England. He opened the bakery on the main floor of his home while his family of seven lived upstairs. The bakery had a wood-burning brick oven until the 1960s, when the city forced them to convert to electric.

- The bakery was best known for their onion buns and rye bread. Electric mixers were used for cakes and bread but almost every other step was done by hand. Bread baking was started by 10:00 pm so that there would be fresh bread to deliver in the morning. The bakery closed in 1974.

- Scope and Content
- Item consists of a recording of Aliyah Corner. David Bale discusses the one-year education and work program promoted by the World Union of Jewish Students, in Arad. He interviews Shaul Landa, the program's director, who highlights the importance of establishing a network of alumni in North America to promote and support the program. He also interviews four alumni about their experience and what they learned during their sojourn: Beth Shapiro, graduate of 1985, highlights the chance to live in Israel before deciding whether to make aliyah; Simon Goldstein, graduate of 1984, talks about experiencing the hardships of living in Israel and what it really is like to live there; Denise Herwitz, graduate of 1984, who worked in Ma'alot, highlights the opportunity to experience a different side of Israel; and Mark [Mikowitz], graduate of 1980, who notes the opportunity to be inserted in the Israeli job market. All four alumni talk about the possibility of making aliyah: two of them consider it, while the other two are already in the process.
