- Accession consists of material documenting Dr. Elaine Borins. Included is one curriculum vitae of Elaine F. Borins, assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Toronto, material related to Temerty Medicine's apology regarding antisemitism, material related to the donor's maternal uncle who served in the Royal Air Force in the Second World War, and material related to the donor's maternal grandfather regarding the Jews of Western Canada. Of note is a biography of Dr. Borins's father, Bernard Manace, which she wrote with her sister, Corinne, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Administrative History
- Dr. Elaine F. M. Borins was born in Toronto, Ontario, on 20 December 1937. Elaine's mother was born in Korets (today part of Ukraine), while her father was born in Canada.
- Elaine attended Forest Hill Collegiate, graduating in 1956. She went on to study at the University of Toronto (U of T), earning her MD in 1962, and becoming a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1976.
- Elaine’s postdoctoral training included an internship at Mount Sinai Hospital (1962-63) and a fellowship at Sir Frederick Banting Institute (1964-67), which involved research in biochemistry.
- She trained in psychiatry at the University of Toronto and completed training in adult psychiatry in 1976 and a diploma in child psychiatry in 1977 from the University of Toronto.
- Elaine's academic appointments include that of clinical lecturer in psychiatry (1978-1981) and assistant clinical professor of psychiatry (1982-). Both appointments were at U of T.
- Elaine’s hospital appointments include staff psychiatrist, Royal Victoria Hospital (1977-79), directing a child and adolescent psychiatry program, York County Hospital, staff psychiatrist (1977-79), and following that from, 1979 to 1991, was director of The Women’s Clinic, University Health Network, Toronto Western Hospital.
- Elaine's private practice specialized in allergy (1967-72) and then after the fellowship, worked in child and adolescent psychiatry (1977-80), and then specialized in women’s health issues from 1991 onward.
- Elaine holds a number of awards and honours, including a Starkman Scholarship for high academic achievement in medical school (1959), election to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honour Medical Society (1960), the J. F. Hartz Company Prize for high academic achievement (1961), the Cody Silver Medal for graduating second in medical school (1962), a Medical Alumni Associate Scholarship (1962), the Harry S. Eli Outstanding Intern Award (1962), being listed in the Who's Who, Canadian Jewish Women (1983), being named Woman of the Year by the Canadian Association of Women in Science (1989), being listed in the Who's Who, Province of Ontario (1994), being listed in the Who's Who, Professional Women of Canada (1995), and being listed in the International Who's Who of Professionals (1996).
- Elaine married her husband on 11 July 1960. She had two children: her first child was born on 11 March 1961 while her second child was born on 21 February 1964.
