- Scope and Content
- Item consists of Rabbi Witty's segment. He comments on Archbishop of New York, Cardinal John O'Connor's visit to Israel. O'Connor scheduled and later cancelled meetings with Israeli President Chaim Herzog and Prime Minister Yitzakh Shamir. The Archbishop claimed that he did not realize that the Vatican forbade official meetings in Jerusalem, which it did not recognize as Israel's capital. According to Witty, a visit that was to become a symbol of friendship and reconciliation became an embarrassment. He then discusses the controversies surrounding Israel and the Vatican, particularly the latter's refusal to recognize Jerusalem as the former's capital and it's impact on Jewish-Catholic relations.
