- Scope and Content
- Item consists of a recording of Ben Kayfetz's segment. He criticizes Canada's effort to support the Palestine Liberation Organization as an observer mission at the United Nations and its opposition to a resolution proposing the restoration of Palestine territories occupied by Israel. He also briefly reports on the recent death of Shimon Weber, former editor of Forverts, a New York Yiddish newspaper, and his career. He also mentions the Hanukkah menorahs in front of government buildings in Toronto and expresses his concern that Hanukkah will become a generalized holiday like Christmas and lose its character. He finally talks about the demolition underway on the north side of College St., an entire block between Brunswick Ave. and Major St., which, according to him, was the heart of Toronto's Jewish community from the mid-1920s to the mid-1950s. He describes the buildings and institutions that existed in the area.
