- Moniek Szpagat (b. 1923) was born in Wierzbnik (Starachowice), Poland, to Lajb and Mirla (née Dawidowicz). After the Holocaust, Moniek was living in the Lampertheim-Hessen displaced persons camp in the American-occupied zone in Germany. It was there that he met and married his wife Edzia (née Zolkowska). They immigrated to Canada in January 1951 from Le Havre, France, aboard the SS Scythia.
