Administrative History

The donor Sam Dime served in the Second World War. In 1947 Sam and his wife Dorothy Dime (née Stein) opened Dime's Drug Store at 568 Jarvis Street in Toronto. The pair operated the Jarvis Street institution for thirty-nine years and officially closed their store in 1986.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of electronic copies of documents, photographs, and portraits that pertain to Belleville's Sons of Jacob Congregation, to the activities of the Belleville chapter of Hadassah-WIZO, and the Tobe family of Belleville. The records date from 1917 to circa 1981 and include: the congregation's constitution (1972) and a certificate from The United Synagogue of America recognizing it as a member synagogue of the Conservative movement (1961); Hadassah-WIZO documents including certificates relating to donations, photographs, and an advertising bookmark; a plan of the Sons of Jacob Memorial Park (oversized); and various photographs of the Tobe family of Belleville.

There are also two photographs made of oversize drawings (portraits) of persons unidentified but probably related to the Tobes.

Verso of 04.jpg reads: "June 28, 1981. To my friends, Bluma. Zeke Tobe. Happy memories! Bill Palmatier."

Verso of 06.jpg reads: "About 1917. Bellville [sic] Ontario. Dave, Zeke, Bluma, Sam & Abe. Abe was about 5 years when this was taken. His dad 'Moses' (age 42) had died about this time leaving their mom to raise 6 children with very little means of support and she could not speak English."

Custodial History

The records originally belonged to Abe Tobe of Belleville. They were retained by Miri Cohen, president of the shul, when Mr. Tobe passed away in March 2007, to be preserved by the synagogue.

Sam Stern left Canada for Palestine in 1933. Upon his arrival, he joined the Degania Bet Kibbutz, where he stayed until 1934, when he moved to Tel Aviv and worked as a bookkeeper. In 1936, he helped found the Ginosar kibbutz. He was killed in 1939 while on guard duty.

Scope and Content

This item is a photograph of a group of young people in Palestine just before leaving for the Ginosar kibbutz. Sam Stern is lying on the ground in front and standing in the back row second from the right is his girlfriend, Yael.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of one copy print of a photograph taken circa 1942. The photograph depicts the congregation of the B'nai Moses ben Judah Synagogue in London, Ontario, standing in front of the synagogue. Murray Brickman, the late husband of the donor, is pictured as a child in the second row on the far right, wearing a cap.

Custodial History

This item was in the possession of Elaine Brickman. It was mailed to Stan Federman who subsequently gave it to the Ontario Jewish Archives.

Administrative History

The London Jewish community had a single congregation until disagreements led to Moses Leff organizing an alternative minyan. This became Congregation B'nai Moses Ben Judah, named after Moses Pollock. Their first synagogue building, a remodelled wooden church, opened in 1907. This building was supplanted by a new and enlarged structure in 1924. The building was renovated and enlarged again in 1955 but did retain some elements of the old structure. In 1966, B'nai Moses Ben Judah amalgamated with B'nai Israel, and consequently, Congregation Or Shalom was created. The B'nai Israel building was chosen to house the new congregation and the the B'nai Moses building was sold to the Roman Catholic Diocese of London.

David Greenberg was an electrical engineer. He later became a chiropracter in Toronto. His father, Louis Greenberg, was a tailor whose shop was located in the Jarvis and Parliament area on Queen Street East. The family originally belonged to the Berkeley Street Synagogue, but there was no minyan for David's bar mitzvah and they moved to the McCaul Street Synagogue.

James (Jimmy) Kay was born in Winnipeg on April 30, 1922 to Fanny and Sam. He was a lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Army Services Corporation during the second World War. Jimmy married Elaine Cheslow in 1963 and they had four children: Wendy, Sean, Allyson, and Melanie.

After completing his education in commerce and finishing his term in the Army, Jimmy formed a partnership with the Posluns family, which resulted in the creation of Dylex Limited. Together they created the largest specialty clothing retail business in Canada, with over 300 stores from coast to coast. Dylex Limited also purchased Tip Top Tailors from the Dunkelman family.

Jimmy Kay was president of Jewish National Fund from 1973 to 1975.

Ralph Constam was the son of Annie Constam (née Goldstick) and Jake Constam. He served overseas during the Second World War and married his wife Annaca Spero in Holland in 1945. They had two children, Jacqui and Simon, who were born in 1947 and 1949 respectively.

Gary Solway was born in 1957 and is the eldest son of Herbert Solway and Elaine Solway (née Basin), and the great-nephew of Sylvia Schwartz. He began his Bachelor of Commerce at Queen's University in 1976, completeing three years there and then finishing the degree in 1981, after doing his first year of a Bachelor of Laws at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University in 1979-1980. He completed his Bachelor of Laws at the University of Toronto in 1983.

Gary was a Partner with Torys LLP firm from 1983 to 2006 until becoming the Co-Head of the Bennett Jones LLP firm's Private Equity Group and Managing Partner of the Technology, Media and Entertainment Group.

Grry speaks frequently at conferences on topics related to financing of technology businesses. A regular writer, he contributed a number of chapters to Directors' Duties in Canada, 5th Edition, published in Canada by CCH Canadian Limited in 2012, and the Ontario Corporations Law Guide, published in Canada by CCH Canadian Limited. Gary is also the secretary of the CVCA, Canada's venture capital and private equity association.

Herbert Solway is married to Ann Shortell and is the father of Gary Solway. received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto in 1953 and a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1955. He was called to the Bar in 1957. Herbert was a founding member of Goodmans LLP, joining the firm in 1955. He has played a significant role in helping build the foundation of the firm, serving as its chair from 1980 to 1992. He served as a Chariman until 1994 and Partner until 1998. He continues to serve as Counsel to Goodmans. He was appointed to the Queen's Counsel in 1968.

Herbert has also been a Director of Gluskin Sheff and Associates Inc. since May 2006. He is a Director of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and a Founding director of the Tarragon Theatre Company. He was a Founding director of Sun Media Corporation, as well as a Director of John Labatt Ltd.

Carol Solway is the daughter of Alex and Fanny Solway, brother of Herbert Solway and the niece of Sylvia Schwartz.

David Rotenberg was born in Toronto on 24 July 1930 and educated at the University of Toronto. He worked as an insurance agent, and served on Toronto City Council and Metro Toronto Council from 1961 to 1972. In the 1972 election he ran for mayor, and lost to David Crombie in a close, three-way race. Rotenberg was later appointed as a commissioner on the Toronto Transit Commission, and served from 1975 to 1977. He first campaigned for the Ontario legislature in the 1975 provincial election, and finished second against Liberal Vern Singer in Wilson Heights. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1977 to 1985 as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party, and was briefly a cabinet minister in the government of Frank Miller. Rotenberg attempted a return to politics and campaigned for the Canadian House of Commons in the 1997 federal election as a candidate of the Progressive Conservatives in the riding of Eglinton—Lawrence, losing to incumbent Liberal Joe Volpe.

Rotenberg has been named as an honorary officer in the Canadian Jewish Congress.

Admin History/Bio

David Greenberg was an electrical engineer, who married at the age of nineteen. He later became a chiropracter in Toronto. His father, Louis Greenberg, was a tailor whose shop was located in the Jarvis and Parliament area on Queen Street East. The family originally belonged to the Berkeley Street Synagogue, but there was no minyan for David's bar mitzvah and they moved to the McCaul Street Synagogue. David's stepmother's name was Sadie.

Item is a portrait of David Greenberg, his father Louis Greenberg and his stepmother Sadie. The picture was taken for David's bar mitzvah on October 13, 1935.
