Admin History/Bio
Located at 285 Spadina Avenue, the Standard Theatre was the first purpose-built Yiddish theatre in Canada. Described as the finest Yiddish theatre in North America, it contained seating for 1500 and included a balcony. The Standard held its opening performance and ceremony on August 31, 1922. It became the site of a variety of Yiddish plays, musical performances and other entertainment. The theatre was also the scene of political activity during this period, including a 1929 gathering to commemorate the death of Lenin. In 1935, due to poor attendance, the theatre was converted into a movie theatre renamed the Strand. Over the next several decades, the theatre was used for a variety of purposes, including as a Chinese movie house and even as a burlesque house for a time. Most recently, the main floor of the building has been converted into a bank, while the upper balcony has been closed. The Standard was designated as a heritage building in 2007.
Scope and Content
File consists of architectural drawings by J. M. Jeffrey of the Standard Theatre located at 285 Spadina Avenue. Elevations, floor plans, sections, detailing, a heating plan, a roof plan, a colour drawing of a theatre sign and technical drawings of structural elements of the building are included. These drawings are the original permit plans that would have been used onsite during construction. Although Jeffrey is the name on the drawings, Benjamin Brown has also been credited as the architect for the theatre according to an August 31, 1922 Globe and Mail article detailing the opening night.

Admin History/Bio
In the 1930s, the United Welfare Clothing Centre was established to provide clients of the Jewish Family Welfare Bureau, Jewish Big Sisters Committee, Jewish Big Brother Movement, and the JIAS Refugee Establishment Committee with clothing. The Centre’s finances and daily operations were managed by the JFWB’s Clothing Committee; however, other organizations also participated in its operation. For instance, the Rest Home Club collected, sorted and cleaned used clothing, and members of the Community Sewing Centre regularly made clothes for the Centre. The Centre was located at 55 Baldwin Street and likely stopped operating in the early 1940s due to a lack of funds and donations.
Scope and Content
Series consists of textual records and one architectual drawing documenting the renovation and operation of the JFWB's Clothing Centre. Included is correspondence, one blueprint, a building alteration proposal, reports, price lists, inventories, publicity articles and meeting notices, agendas and minutes.

Admin History/Bio
The Herzl Zion Club of Toronto was organized in 1910 by John Shayne, as a Jewish boys fraternal club. Members of the club engaged in athletic activates, minstrel shows, debates and lecture series and other cultural activities such as dances and theatrical productions. They were famous for their staged follies at the Loew's Winter Garden Theatre on Yonge Street.
The Club originally met on Sundays at the Zionist Institute, until they purchased their own clubhouse at 210 Beverley Street after the First World War. By the end of the 1920s, as many of the boys entered the professions and got married, the club experienced a waning in membership and was eventually forced to disband.
In May 1943, a reunion was organized by former members Jack Samuel and Nat Gollom. The following year the club re-formed, but this time with a greater emphasis placed on fundraising, specifically for the Combined Palestine Appeal (later the United Jewish Appeal) and the Hebrew University. The Club also began publishing an internal newsletter entitled the Herzl Zion Digest. They later affiliated with the Zionist Organization of Canada, Central Region, and often sent delegates to ZOC conferences.

1 photograph : b&w ; 21 x 26 cm
Date
6 Jul. 1927
Scope and Content
Item is a photograph of a group of young men who were members of Hakoah Vienna, a Jewish sports club in Vienna, Austria. On the reverse of the photograph are signatures of the famous sports club and a German inscription "In memory of the cameraderie of the sport club Hakoah." Signatures identified include: Max Scheuer; [Béla Guttmann?]; [Schwartzbein?]; Joseph Stross.
According to an email from a member of the public, the photograph was likely taken in connection with the Hakoah soccer team's appearance in Toronto for a match against a Toronto all-star team. The game took place on 26 May 1927 and was covered in the Jewish Telegraphic Agency the next day.
Administrative History
The Hakoah soccer team was established in Vienna, Austria, circa 1909. It was closed down by the Nazis sometime between 1938 and 1941. In 1945, the club re-formed its football team only to disband in 1949.
