File consists of photographs documenting the life of Trudy Cowan Luker from infancy to age 60. Included are pictures of Trudy as a baby with her parents Saul and Lillian Cowan and brother Michael Cowan, as a young child with family and friends at Wapaska Lodge, and in group photos at Homewood Elementary School. Photographs of Trudy as a teenager include those taken with the Bathurst Heights Collegiate Drama Club, group photos of campers and staff at Camp Ogama, several photos taken in front of the family home on Brucewood, and her high school graduation portrait. There are images taken at her graduation in Physical and Occupational Therapy from the University of Toronto in 1962, and a studio portrait taken in 1980. Later photographs showcase her involvement in cultural, civic, and historical pursuits including activities at Fort Calgary and a heritage event in Markham, Ontario attended by Prince Charles. As well, there is a photograph of Trudy wlcoming the family of her husband Leonid Luker when they landed at Mirabel Airport, Montreal as immigrants from the former Soviet Union.

Jack Cowan was the third of the nine Cohen (Cowan) siblings, and the second boy. His son Bernard Cowan was the announcer's voice on the television show " Front Page Challenge".

Scope and Content

File consists of two copies of Jack Cowan's 1989 memoir, an announcement of his 70th birthday party hosted by Toronto United Jewish People's Order, newspaper clippings about the 60th and 65th anniversaries of Jack and his wife Anne, and an invitation to their 60th anniverary party. As well there is an obituary for Jack and two speeches about the couple delivered by their grandchildren at a memorial event in 1992 and a photograph of Anne taken in the 1970s or 1980s.

Bernard Cowan was the only child of Jack Cowan (the third of the nine Cowan siblings). Bernard predeceased both his parents, passing away at 68 years of age. He had a notable career in radio and television and was well known as the announcer on CBC's "Front Page Challenge". He was also a founding member of ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Television and Radio Artists).

File consists of photographs of Bernard Cowan in the 1950s and 1970s, and with his wife and children in the 1950s or 1960s, as well as a newspaper clipping about his career, obituaries, and a funeral card from Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel.

Scope and Content

File consists of a scrapbook documenting the participation of Trudy Cowan, her brother Michael Cowan, and cousin Phil Cowan in dramatic productions in high school, university, and beyond. Included are events staged by the drama group at Bathurst Heights Collegiate, B'nai Brith Youth, Simpson's Collegiate Drama Festival, the Ontario One Act Play Festival, and the Univerity College Follies at Hart House, University of Toronto. Trudy played leading roles in many of the productions and Michael acted as musical director and played piano at rehearsals. Memorabilia in the scrapbook includes tickets, programmes, newspaper clippings, photographs, and correspondence. The last event is a 1989 production at Heritage Park Calgary in which Trudy Cowan portrayed Nellie McClung as well as producing the event.

Saul Cowan (1910-2002) was the seventh of nine children born to Zvi Hirsh (Harris) Cohen (1872-1954) and Chana Leah (Annie) (née Gollom) Cohen (1873-1960). His siblings were Woolf Cowan (Colvin) (1896-1987), Kate Cowan (b.1898) (m. Wener), Jack Cowan (1900-1992), Rivka (Reva) Cowan (1902-ca.2002) (m. Lieberman), Moe Cowan (b.1904), Jeanne Cowan (b.1906) (m. Kallman), Norman Cowan (b. 1909) and Miriam Cowan (b. 1919) (m. Rose).

The Cowan family immigrated to Toronto from England with their six oldest children circa 1908. Harris worked as a tailor in England and as an operator in men's clothing factory Tip Top Tailors in Toronto.

Saul graduated from the University of Toronto in 1931 in honours philosophy.

In 1932, Cowan married Lillian Rosenthal (1910-1978), the daughter of Morris (1883-1967) and Nessie (Celia) (née Soren) Rosenthal (1881-1969). Together, they had two children, Michael (b. 1939) and Trudy (b. 1941). The Rosenthal family ran a boarding house on Hanlan's Point and had a place at Belle Ewart. In 1945, Morris and Celia purchased Wapaska Lodge on Muskoka Bay just outside Gravenhurst and ran it as a family resort from 1948-1965.

Lillian, who was a public school teacher, passed away in 1978 and the following year Saul married Libbie Aiken (d. 2006). Libbie had been the head physiotherapist at the Toronto General Hospital during the late 1940s.

Saul pursued a career with the North York Board of Education serving as both trustee and chairman from 1958 to 1976. He was also very involved with the Jewish community and the growing North York community. He was also involved with organizations such as B'nai Brith, Canadian Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (CPPNW), and the North York Social Planning Committee. He was a founder of the York Finch General Hospital.

Trudy studied physical and occupational therapy at the University of Toronto but changed career direction when she moved to Calgary in 1969 and became involved in historical organizations such as the Glenbow Museum, the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation, and the Lougheed House Conservation Society. She married Leonid Luker (b. 1937) in 1982.

Scope and Content

Fonds consists of records documenting the Cowan (Cohen) family and their connected branches including the Rosenthal, Soren, Gollom, Aiken, and Altshuller families. The records originated from Saul Cowan, his first and second wives, Lillian Rosenthal and Libbie Aiken, and his daughter, Trudy Cowan Luker. Records include photographs of family members at graduations, weddings, school, religious events, camping activities, and milestone celebrations. Textual records include traditional and email correspondence, marriage certificates, passports, immigration documents, family histories, theatre and concert programmes, and newspaper clippings. Many of the records document Saul Cowan's personal and professional activities. The majority of the material relates to the Cowan and Rosenthal families.

Four books from the collection have been removed and integrated into the OJA's library holdings. Bill Stern's father, Moishe (Morris) Shternshis (ca. 1893-1976), was born in Lagov, Poland, the son of Lebil and Rachel (Shedlovsky) Shternshis. He came to Canada in 1911, and upon his arrival, changed his surname to Stern. Bill Stern's mother, Fanny Rumianek (ca. 1896-1991), was born in Chmielnik, Poland, the daughter of Moishe Hamelech and Golda (Zimmerman) Rumianek. The family arrived in Canada in 1913. Moishe and Fanny met a few years later, and were married at the Ostrovtzer Synagogue on Cecil Street on 16 December, 1916. The couple moved to Hamilton in 1917, but later returned to Toronto.

For over forty years, Moishe worked as a milkman. Beginning in 1921, he was the first Jewish independent milkman in Toronto. It was a profitable and successful venture for the Stern family, and as a result, Moishe founded a co-operative in 1944, with six other milkmen. Named the Alliance Dairy, the business was eventually bought by Borden's Creamery in 1966, and Moishe retired as a result. Fanny volunteered much of her time to organizations such as the Jewish Old Folks Home and Sunnybrook Hospital.

The first child born to Moishe and Fanny was Max Stern (1918-1997), who eventually joined the army, married Ruth Soles, and had two daughters, Bonnie and Janie. Today, Bonnie is a well-known Canadian cook-book author. Bill was the second child, born in 1921.

In 1923, Moishe brought his younger brother, Sam Stern (1912-1939), to Canada from Lagov, Poland. Although actually his uncle, Bill was raised knowing Sam as his brother. In 1933, Sam travelled to Palestine and founded the Ginosar Kibbutz, near Tibireus. He was killed six years later while on guard duty.

Scope and Content

This series consists of photographs documenting the Stern and Rumianek families. They include individual and group portraits, as well as snapshots of family events and gatherings.

The photographs have been arranged chronologically and have been described at the item level.

Norman Cowan was the eighth of the nine Cowan siblings and the fifth boy. He worked as an estate planner with Imperial Life.

Scope and Content

File consists of family correspondence and photographs of Norman Cowan and his wife Bertha from the 1940s to the 1980s in locations such as Wapaska Lodge, Gravenhurst, and Heritage Park, Calgary, as well as a photo of their son Phil as a young man. There are three greeting cards decorated with photographs of Norman's photography and Bertha's paintings, a speech delivered by Norman to the Toronto Jewish Historical Society on Ward 4 (Kensington) in Toronto during the depression years, and an article from the Canadian Jewish News about the presentation, as well as newspaper clippings about the couple's retirement activities, and an advertisement for an exhibit of their art at the Koffler Gallery in Toronto. Finally, there is a sympathy acknowledgement card for a donation to Baycrest written by Saul Cowan following the passing of his brother Norman.

Scope and Content

This accession consists of photographs from London and Warsaw of the Rhinewine family and friends.In addition there are two Jewish New Year cards written in Polish.

Administrative History

Abraham Rhinewine (1887-1932) was born in Poland and immigrated to London, England in 1902, at the age of 15. There he met his wife, Annie and together they immigrated to Toronto in 1907. They had two (possibley three) children, Shulamith and Avivah (Bakerspigel). Abraham had a sister named Sarah, who was involved with UNRAA after the Second World War and was the Assistant Director of Jewish Family and Child Services for many years. Abraham was a prominent scholar and the editor of the Toronto Daily Hebrew Journal.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of three photographs documenting the Franklin family of Toronto, an early and prominent family of the Jewish community. The photographs consist of of the wedding dinner of Annie Franklin and Elias Robinson (12 June 1916) as well as two exterior views of A. Franklin, the pawn and bicycle repair shop with Franklin family members standing outside.

Custodial History

These items were discovered in the processing room. Their custodial history is unknown, although it is certain that they arrived at the Archives prior to 2001. They were assigned this accession number by the archivist.

4/18/2012: the original accession form was found for these photographs, donated in 1977, but an accession number had never been assigned at the time.

Administrative History

Abraham Franklin (ca. 1844-1905) and his wife Frances (Fanny) Franklin (ca. 1844-1908) came to Canada from Germany in 1865, via the United States. Together they had seven children: Jacob (John), Henry (Harry), Hyman (Herman), Annie (m. Robinson), Simon (Sam), Dora and Katie.

Abraham began as a picture frame dealer on York Street, later becoming a second hand clothing store owner with his wife on Queen Street West. By 1890, Abraham had established a jewellery store named Franklin Brothers, with his sons Jacob and Henry, and by the early 1910s also owned A. Franklin & Sons. The two businesses continued to operate simultaneously as a pawn shop, a jewellery store, and even a bicycle repair shop.

The Franklin family owned many large plots of valuable land in downtown Toronto, which they leased out to individuals and businesses, including Eaton's. Their land was located on the north side of Albert Street from James Street to Bay Street; along Gerrard Street from Yonge to Elizabeth streets; and along Walton Street from Yonge to Elizabeth streets. Later, the children inherited the property held by their parents, which had extended around the Queen Street West and Portland Avenue area.

In 1916, stemming from family concerns over her upcoming marriage to Elias Robinson, Annie Franklin transferred ownership of her portion of the inherited Franklin estate to her brothers, Henry, Hyman, and Simon for a cost of $25,000 to be held in trust for her.

Rivka (Reva) Cowan Lieberman was the fourth child (and second girl) of the nine Cowan siblings.

Scope and Content

File consists of photographs of Rivka with her daughter Ruth, with her husband Frank Lieberman, and of herself in later years. As well, there is family correspondence, two copies of her 1997 memoir, an invitation to her 90th birthday hosted by her family, an undated audiotape of an interview with her, and material pertaining to her son David's career as a psychologist at a university in Scotland.

Admin History/Bio

Michael Cowan is the son of Saul and Lillian Cowan.

Scope and Content

File consists of photographs of Michael Cowan as a small child, in a group photo of the Homewood Public School choir, as a teenager in front of the family home on Brucewood in Toronto, and with his wife Nancy in Montreal. There is a commencement programme for his 1957 graduation from Bathurst Heights Collegiate, and programmes for recitals, concerts, and theatre events in which Michael was a participant or composed the music. These include the UC Follies at Hart House, University of Toronto, The Royal Conservatory of Music, Temple Sinai Religious School operetta, and The Jazz Singer at the Saidie Bronfman Yiddish Theatre in Montreal. As well there is correspondence between Michael and family members, and a letter written by him at the age of 11 to the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society offering a suggestion for the cause of rheumatism.

Accession consists of seven electronic copies of original photographs depicting various members of the Miller family of Cornwall, Ontario. Included is a photograph of Nathan Miller with his eyeglass testing machine, golden and diamond anniversary gatherings for Nathan and Dubby, a studio portrait of Abe Miller, a photo of Ben Miller in an army tent with fellow soldiers and two photos of Nathan Miller holding his grandson, Jack.

The original photographs are in the possession of the donor, Jack Miller. The scans were produced by the donor for the Archives' Small Jewish Communities project.
