Accession consists of two photographs of the reception at which Julius Miller was recognized by the Jewish community of Cornwall for his twenty-five years of service as president of Beth-El Congregation with a grove of trees planted in his name by the Jewish National Fund. (Julius Miller was the father of the donor.)

Accession consists of one copy of Rabbi Abraham Fine's recollections of the Peterborough Jewish community. Manuscript contains one colour photograph of Rabbi Fine.

Custodial History

Manuscript was donated by Ken Beck. His parents lived in Peterborough from the early 1940s to the 1970s and Ken grew up there. Mr. Fine gave the manuscript to Ken's parents, and Ken maintained it in his possession until its donation to OJA.

Scope and Content

This accession consists of four 16 mm films and one copy DVD, documenting the Moldaver family in Peterborough. The films were taken during the 1950s and 1960s and include images of a Camp Wahanowin family visit featuring people by the lake, boating, playing badminton and softball and waterskiing, as well as other cottage scenes of kids swimming and jumping off the dock, canoeing, and several families sitting by the lake.

The films also document several family and community events, such as a family vacation to Chicago, fancy parties, Hanukkah and Purim celebrations, family dinners, and bar mitzvahs, including the bar mitzvah of the donor Joel Moldaver. There are also several scenes of family life in Peterborough including people skating outdoors, and group shots of people standing outside of their homes and getting into cars.

In addition, the accession contains electronic scans of eight family photographs, including the donor's grandparents and great-parents, his parents' wedding which was the first Jewish wedding in Peterborough, and three images of his own bar mitzvah. There is also one oversize photograph of the 1942 Plenary session of the Canadian Jewish Congress, where the formation of Israel was addressed (photo credit: Federal Photos, Montreal).

Scope and Content

Accession consists of material primarily documenting kosher meat scandals and strikes in Toronto in the 1920s and 1930s as well as the Kehilla (Toronto Rabbinical Board). There are complete pages of some documents and portions of others. The documents are flyers (public notices) in Yiddish (with some Hebrew in religious context and quotations) to do with a scandal or several scandals in which it became clear a number of butchers were operating outside Rabbinical Board supervision and therefore selling (assumed to be) treif meat to Toronto Jews. Secondary scandal with Rabbi Yehuda Leib Graubart, who allegedly split off from the Rabbinical Board with six butchers to do business outside the union, with wholesalers, and gaining more money than union butchers and the rabbis working with them. Another thread relates to a strike for cheaper meat, including meetings of women picketers, and then for better conditions for local butchers. The flyers mostly fall between 1920-1940. All are from Toronto. Lists of local butchers’ shops with addresses and names are included.

Additional flyers cover Communist protests and protest meetings against German fascism and pogroms, specifically Hitler's government's prosecution of the Communist Party of Germany related to the Reichstag fire. Also included are a 1953 flyer for the tenth anniversary commemoration of the Latvian-Lithuanian Jews’ annihilation, and an open letter to Rabbi Abraham Aaron Price regarding his title.

Custodial History

There is no information on the acquisition of this material. However, retrieved from the original package in which the material was lodged was a note "Kashruth fliers from E. Miller" or Mitler.

Accession consists of five photographs, eight copy photographs, and four negatives which include group photographs of Elizabeth St. (Lizzies) sports teams. There is also a bar mitzvah postcard photo of the son of Mr. Ungarman from Opatow and a group photo of one man and eight women in front of a composite photo of the Ezras Noshem Society of Mount Sinai Hospital. As well, there are seventeen newspaper clippings about high school football, rugby, and basketball competitions, many including Lizzies teams.

Administrative History

Pearl Miller Zucker (née Sidman) was born on 18 Jan. 1914 in Manchester, England to Jennie Sidman Cohen (née Davis) (b. 5 May 1885, Russia-d. 31 Dec. 1983, Toronto) and Simon Sidman. Miller was the middle name given to Pearl at birth by her father. Pearl's mother Jennie had married Simon Sidman on 21 Aug. 1910. Simon died on 10 Dec. 1928 at age 45. Jennie then married Myer Cohen on Feb. 15, 1956 in Manchester, who died sometime between 1956 and 1959. Jennie became a landed immigrant in Canada in 1959.

Moses Solomon "Solly" Zucker (Sugar) (b. 6 Feb. 1908, County of Gateshead, England-d. 22 Jan. 2001, Toronto) was born to Isaac and Esther Sugar (née Greenbaum). He married Pearl "Pesh" Sidman on 20 June 1934. Miller was Pearl's given middle name. The couple had two sons: Gerald Zucker (b. 5 July 1936) and Simon Zucker (b. 15 Nov. 1937). Solly served with the fire brigade in Manchester during the Second World War.

The couple immigrated to Canada from England in June 1952 for economic reasons. Pearl had a cousin named Mark Gilbert already living in Canada. The couple and their two sons first landed in Montreal, but only stayed a year before moving to Toronto. Upon arrival in Canada, Solly got a job with the Canadian Government, possibly with the RCAF at Downsview. Pearl worked for Bell Canada. The family belonged to Shaarei Tefillah Synagogue and lived in the Bathurst and Eglinton area.

Pearl died on 20 February 2018 at the age of 104.

Mollie Bochner (b. 1908?) and Rose Bochner (1904-1978) are probably the daughters of a Myer Bochner (1878-1968?) who immigrated from Austria in 1900. He and his wife Mollie (or Malka) (b. 1881) lived at 90 Gordon Street in Guelph. They had five children: Thomas (b. 1900); Rosie (1904-1978); Henery (b. 1906); Minnie (or Mollie?) (b. 1908), and Bella (b.1910).

Rose Bochner married Charles Rotstein, who owned a furniture business on Queen Street. Her daughter married Kertzer. Her nephew was television actor Lloyd Bochner (1924-2005).

Accession contains one contract between Mr. Abraham Landsberg and the Chevra Tehillim (McCaul Street) Synagogue for the purchase of two seats in the congregational pews. The seats were utilized by Mr. Landsberg from 1906 until 1924, when the seats were transferred to his son Dr. Harry Landsberg.

Administrative History

Abraham Landsberg was an early Jewish immigrant to Toronto. Born in Russia in 1859, Abraham arrived in Canada with wife Rebecca, sister Mary and daughters Edith and Ray in 1892. After settling in Toronto, they had four more children: Jack, Lillian, Maurice and Harold. The family lived at 195 College Street. Abraham's sons took up diverse professions; his oldest, Jack, became a plumbing contractor, his middle son, Maurice, became a mechanic and his youngest son, Harold, became a dentist, setting up a practice with Dr. Benjamin Garfield.

Admin History/Bio

During his lifetime Sol Edell regularly attended or maintained membership in a number of different synagogues. As a child Sol Edell’s family were members of Shomrai Shabbos. After he married he became a founding member of Clanton Park. His second wife Celia was a member of Adas Israel prior to their marriage. The Edell’s also had a cottage in Belle Ewart and they attended the synagogue which the Jewish cottagers had established for the summer.

Scope and Content

Sub-series consists of correspondence, receipts and newspaper clippings relating to the religious activities of the Edell family. This includes dues and donations to Adas Israel, Clanton Park and Shomrai Shabbos synagogues. As well there are newspaper clippings about the synagogue in Belle Ewart. Also included are contracts for the sale of chametz for Passover.

Accession consists of one group photograph of the Bugle Band of the 108th Canadian Infantry Battalion (the Irish Canadians). Joseph Atkins is seated in the front row, 4th from the right.

Custodial History

The photograph was in the possession of Beryl Kofman, the niece of Joseph Atkins. She inherited it from her father, Benjamin Atkins.

Administrative History

Joseph Atkins was born in Russia to Sarah and Henry Atkins around 1900. He was the youngest of 8 children. His siblings include: Benjamin, Harry, Edelle, Lillian, and Francis. The family likely immigrated to Toronto prior to the outbreak of the First World War and Sarah ran a convenience store at 204 Gerrard Street. Joseph joined the Canadian army at age 16 in August 1916. He was killed in action on August 8th 1918 in France.

Scope and Content

Accession consists of a scrapbook created by Eleanor Cadesky Miller when she was a student at U of T and during the early years of her nursing career and marriage to Harold Miller. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings and mementoes including cards, tickets, letters, invitations, poems and programmes from social events, plays and concerts. The entities documented include the UJWF Women's Campaign, Delta Phi Epsilon sorority, the Deborah chapter of Hadassah, the Temple Players of Holy Blossom Temple, and Forest Hill veterans. Also featured are obituaries for Eleanor Miller's contemporary, Harry Sniderman, and a 1939 newsletter from Camp Winnebagoe.

Administrative History

Eleanor Cadesky (1923- ) is the daughter of R. L. Cadesky. She attended the University of Toronto from 1939 to 1943, graduating with a diploma in physiotherapy. The following year she married Harold Miller, also a graduate of U of T. Together they raised three children in Toronto, Ronald, Gary and Lynn.

Accession consists of seven electronic copies of original photographs depicting various members of the Miller family of Cornwall, Ontario. Included is a photograph of Nathan Miller with his eyeglass testing machine, golden and diamond anniversary gatherings for Nathan and Dubby, a studio portrait of Abe Miller, a photo of Ben Miller in an army tent with fellow soldiers and two photos of Nathan Miller holding his grandson, Jack.

Custodial History

The original photographs are in the possession of the donor, Jack Miller. The scans were produced by the donor for the Archives' Small Jewish Communities project.

Mollie and Rose are probably the daughters of a Myer Bochner (1878-1968?) who immigrated from Austria in 1900. He and his wife Mollie (or Malka) (b. 1881) lived at 90 Gordon Street in Guelph. They had five children: Thomas (b. 1900); Rosie (1904-1978); Henery (b. 1906); Minnie (or Mollie?) (b. 1908), and Bella (b.1910).

Rose Bochner married Charles Rotstein, who owned a furniture business on Queen Street. Her daughter married Kertzer. Her nephew was television actor Lloyd Bochner (1924-2005).

Accession consists of a Goel Tzedec Synagogue seat deed for Harris Yanover, purchased in 1907.

Administrative History

Goel Tzedec was established in 1883. It was originally an orthodox congregation founded by a group of recent immigrants from Lithuania and was first situated in a room at Richmond and York Streets. Three years later a former Methodist church at University Avenue at Elm Street was purchased and remodelled. In 1904 the congregation hired an architect to construct a new building and in February of 1907, the synagogue on University Avenue was dedicated. It became the largest synagogue in Toronto, accommodating 1200 congregants.

During the early decades of the twentieth century, Goel Tzedec became more ethnically mixed and established a religious school and women's auxiliary to help raise money and run special events. In 1925, the congregation joined the Conservative Synagogue Movement and introduced changes to its services.

In September of 1952, Goel Tzedec and its sister synagogue Beth Hamidrash Hagadol, amalgamated to form Beth Tzedec.

Harris Yanover was the grandfather of Rayna Rabin.
