John Judah Glass was born in England on 31 October 1895 to Morris and Pearl Glass. In 1907, he immigrated to Toronto—two years after his father. In 1917, he graduated from the University of Toronto. During the First World War, he served overseas in the 58th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force and was awarded the Military Medal for bravery. In 1921, Glass he earned his law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School. That same year, he was called to the Ontario bar. Glass became a practicing barrister and solicitor and was a member of the Canadian Bar Association.

Glass went on to have a political career that spanned fifteen years. From 1928 to 1930, he served as trustee for the Toronto Board of Education. From 1931 to 1934, he represented the former Ward 4 as alderman in Toronto City Council. From 1934 to 1943, he represented the St. Andrew riding as Liberal MPP in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. In 1943, he left the world of active politics.

A significant portion of Glass' life was devoted to Jewish community work. For more than ten years, he was national president of the Canadian Federation of Polish Jews. He was also a member of Beth Tzedec Congregation's board of governors, a past president of the Toronto Zionist Council, a member of the Zionist Organization of Canada's national and regional executive, a founder of the Canadian Jewish Congress, a past president of Toronto B'nai Brith, and a founder and first president of the General Wingate Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. His affiliations included the Toronto Council of Christians and Jews, the Palestine Lodge, the Jewish Home for the Aged and Baycrest Hospital, the Jewish Historical Society, United Jewish Appeal, the Jewish National Fund, and State of Israel Bonds.

In addition to his involvement in various Jewish organizations, Glass was a Mason and past-president of the Scarborough Liberal Association. He died on 22 September 1973 and was survived by his wife, Anne Ethel Glass (née Horowitz), and two sons, George and Jesse.

Scope and Content

Fonds documents the life of John Judah Glass (1895-1973), including his involvement in the military, politics, and the Jewish community. The fonds is divided into three series: Artifacts, Documents, and Photographs.

Of note are those records documenting Glass' military service in the First and Second World Wars and his progression through the ranks of public service from lawyer to trustee of the Board of Education, Toronto City Council alderman, and Liberal member of the Parliament of Ontario.

Records also document Glass' participation in the unveiling of the Vimy Ridge Memorial as representative of the Government of Ontario and his role in the purchase of a historic building on Spadina Avenue for a new Zionist headquarters. (The chain of ownership of that property since 1883 is detailed in the records.)

Item is a bronze medallion. Canada and France are written vertically on both sides of a woman looking to the ground and dangling a wreath by her side. She is standing on a stage that has the text VIMY. Text on the statue reads: "Canadian Pilgrimage." The other side of the medallion has an image of the Canadian war memorial at Vimy Ridge with a dedication underneath it that reads: "In memoriam sexacinto millum Canadiensium oui annon domini MCMXIV-MCMXVIII arms vitra mare vitam pro patria vitro dediderunt."

Item is a silver pin holding four ribbons: blue; white and red; purple, yellow, blue, green, orange, and yellow; and white and blue. At the end of each ribbon is a coin approximately one-and-a-half centimetres in diameter. All have writing on one side and an image on the other. Images include a man riding a horse, a goddess with wings, King George V and Queen Mary, and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

There is also a racist and antisemitic unsigned letter and a newspaper clipping about a claim of desecration and looting in holy places in Jerusalem by the Israeli army. The accusation is being investigated by international organizations including churches and government agencies.

Scope and Content

File consists of a letter to John Glass from the City of Toronto Victory Loan Committee regarding his acceptance of an invitation to address representatives of the Superior Cloak Company. There is also documentation of a conference on April 15, 1942 of the Citizens' Victory Council including an invitation to John Glass to attend, his response, and a publicity announcement (described as "conference call") detailing the speakers and topics to be discussed.

Jewish voluntary military units formed during the First World War to fight with British troops for the liberation of Palestine from Turkish rule after Turkey entered the war in 1914 on the side of Germany and Austria-Hungary. The legion was conceived and promoted by Vladimir (Ze'ev) Jabotinsky, a Russian-Jewish intelectual and Zionist. The units were gradually demobilized after the war and during the interwar years Haganah was born and eventually the Israel Defense Forces.

Scope and Content

File consists of a a booklet titled History of the Jewish Legion on the 50th Anniversary of the Jewish Battalion 1917-1967 by Dr. J. Schechtman and two typed excerpts from the Story of the Jewish Legion by Zeev Jabotinsky. There is correspondence from Shlomo Perla of the Zionist Revisionist Organization of Toronto to John Glass concerning the donation to Glass of the publications mentioned above. Finally, there is material prepared by Glass including Preface to the History of the Jewish Legion, notes, and a detailed essay "The Unique Saga of the Jewish Legion."

Physical Condition

One of the Zeev Jabotinsky excerpts is badly stained.

Folder consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence between John Glass and a number of individuals including Samuel Factor, W. G. La Marsh, Isadore Levinter, W. L. Miller, M. F. Hepburn (prime minister of Ontario), Colin Campbell, J. Louis Shannon, Gordon Conant, Mitchel Sharp, and W. Ross Macdonald.

Correspondence is generated by Ontario government departments and institutions including the Department of the Attorney General, Legislative Assembly, Office of the Prime Minister (now Pemier), Minister of Health, Ministry of Works, Department of Property, Treasury Department, and the Toronto Historical Board.

Of note is a letter from the Department of Public Welfare confirming that John Glass will be in charge of the memorial wreath presentation at the 1937 City Hall Remembrance Day Service. As well there is correspondence concerning a 1971 reunion of survivors of the 1919 Veterans Class at Osgoode Hall Law School. This small group of about eight men included John Glass.

St. Andrew was a provinicial electoral district in downtown Toronto that stretched from Yonge to Bathurst and included Spadina Avenue and Kensington Market. It was created in 1926 and existed until 1967 when it was merged with an adjacent riding to form St. Andrew: St. Patrick.

Scope and Content

File consists of correspondence related to the re-election of John Glass as a Liberal member of the Ontario parliament for the riding of St. Andrew. Campaign organization is documented with letters requesting and acknowleddging support from Liberal organizations and individuals hosting meetings and making endorsements on the radio. There is also information regarding publicity material and staff appointments. Telegrams and letters from friends, colleagues, and other supporters congratulating John Glass on his victory.

File consists of correspondence in 1937 from John Glass congratulating successful candidates in the Toronto municipal election to positions including the city council, board of control and the board of education. Ralph Day is congratulated on his appointment as mayor of Toronto. Lastly Glass congatulates Allan Lawrence on his appointment to the provincial legislature in 1967.

Thanking Glass for their 1937 election victories are members of the board of control, board of education, Mayor Ralph Day, and the assisstant registrar.

In 1963 Vernon Singer thanks Glass for recognizing his election to the Ontario legislature, and in 1964 Philip Givens, newly elected mayor of Toronto, expresses his appreciation to Glass for his message.
