- Admin History/Bio
- Although originally referred to as "contributions from subscribers", by the 1920s the annual fundraising campaign efforts of the FJPT were simply referred to as "Campaign." Beginning in 1917 with a collection of $25,000 used to support a group of eleven affiliated charitable organizations, early campaigns relied on face-to-face solicitations, door-to-door collections, and mailed instalments for most of the FJPT income.
- By 1924, collections had risen to over $70,000 from more than 1,600 donors. Three more "affiliated" agencies could be supported. By 1929, donations had surpassed $140,000, but thereafter declined dramatically by almost 50%, as the Great Depression reduced wages and employment while multiplying need. At the same time, collections fell dramatically when many donors became unable to fulfill their pledges. Campaign results were thus woefully inadequate to fund the traditional social service organizations while now competing with the campaigns of newer organizations such as the Canadian Jewish Congress, the Palestine Appeal, and Toronto's impoverished Jewish educational institutions.
- In 1938, the FJPT was supplanted by the United Jewish Welfare Fund. This successor organization was created with an expanded mandate to improve and re-unify fund-raising within Toronto's Jewish community. Its success would underwrite the following half-century of expansion of Toronto's Jewish community facilities and programs.
- Scope and Content
- Series consists of one sub-series containing reports, promotional materials and newsclippings documenting the 1934 and 1935 fund-raising campaigns of the FJPT. Series also contains one wooden ruler promoting the 1931 FJPT fund-raising campaign.
- Notes
- Although the organization was created in 1917, the only remaining documentation on FJPT campaigns from 1917 through 1933 is that found in the Annual Reports of 1917, 1924-25 and 1929.

- The Jewish Camp Council was formed in 1945 by five different groups running summer camps for Jewish youth: B’nai Brith, the National Council of Jewish Women, the Mothers’ and Babes’ Summer Rest Home Association, the United Jewish Welfare Fund of Toronto and the YM-YWHA
- The United Jewish Welfare Fund eventually assumed responsibility for all camp property, including Camp Northland in Haliburton, and programming for all camps was organized as a unified service. The Jewish Camp Council Board of Directors included representatives from all five organizations, while the executive director of the YM-YWHA acted as executive director of the Jewish Camp Council. Initially, the head office was located at Camp B'nai Brith, near Orillia, and then moved into the new YM-YWHA building at Spadina and Bloor in 1953.

- The architectural firm Kaplan & Sprachman was established by Harold S. Kaplan and Abraham Sprachman in 1922. Kaplan & Sprachman were best known for their more than 300 movie theatre projects completed from the 1920s to the 1960s, designing and renovating theatres across Canada in progressive "modern" styles and using innovative building materials. In 1937, they were awarded the bronze medal in the Sixth Biennial Toronto Exhibition for their interiors to the Eglinton Theatre (400 Eglinton Ave. W.) in Toronto, considered to be the finest example of their Art deco design work.
- Over the course of their careers, they designed many synagogues for the Jewish community, such as the Anshei Minsk and Shaarei Shomayim synagogues in Toronto, Beth Israel Synagogue, Edmonton, and Beth Israel Synagogue in Vancouver. They also designed the new Mount Sinai Hospital, the Oakdale Golf & Country Club, the Jewish Home for the Aged (Baycrest), and the Jewish Community Centres of Toronto and Hamilton. Their design for the Oakdale Golf & Country Club was chosen as a Canadian entrant in the Arts Competition of the 14th Olympic Games in London, 1948.
- In addition to the projects already mentioned, Kaplan & Sprachman worked on retail stores, warehouses and factories, apartment buildings, and single family residences. Their partnership continued until 1965, when the firm of Kaplan & Sprachman was dissolved as of 30 October 1965. Kaplan continued to work as an architectural consultant for several years after this date.
- Scope and Content
- File consists of textual records and one architectual drawing documenting the renovations to the Clothing Centre, which was located at 55 Baldwin Street. Included is one blueprint and a building alteration proposal by Kaplan & Sprachman Registered Architects, correspondence and job quotes.
