Admin History/Bio

The Menorah Society grew out of the Yiddish Club at the University of Toronto in 1917. The had a semi-official status and superseded most of the other Jewish student groups. Most often they met off campus, but they did have a faculty advisor named Professor W. R. Taylor, who taught Hebrew at University College. The society was a branch of an intercollegiate Jewish society formed at Harvard in 1906 for the study of Jewish history and culture. In Toronto, they flourished until it was undermined by the Greek-letter fraternities in the late 1920s. It dissolved in 1931.

Admin History/Bio

Benevolent societies, or landsmenshaften, were formed in the early part of the twentieth-centurey along shtetl lines by Eastern European Jewish immigrants to Toronto. The societies served to unite members of the community who originated from the same town or region, and also helped to secure passage to Toronto for those who were still in Europe. The societies also provided services to its dues-paying membership such as: aid in finding employment or accomodation, hospital and special medical care, doctor's visitation, sick benefit payments, funeral benefits and arrangements, and in many cases a burial plot. Some societies also provided a loans to its membership through a credit society. In later years, many benevlent societies also began to act as fraternal organizations that engaged in cultural and philanthropic programming.

The benevolent societies included in this sub-series were founded on the following dates: Chenstochover, 1914; Chmielnicker, ?; Drildzer, 1934; Hebrew Sick Benefit, 1910; Ivansker, 1931; Keltzer, 1913; Lagover, 1932; Lubliner, ?; Ostrovtzer Independent, 1925; Pride of Israel, 1905; Radomer, 1935; Stashiver, 1918; Warshaver Lodzer, 1929.

Scope and Content

Sub-series consists of images documenting several sick benefit and mutual benefit societies in Toronto, such as: the Chenstochover Hilfs Farein, the Chmelnicker Society, the Drildzer Young Society, the Hebrew Sick Benefit Society, the Ivansker Mutual Benefit Society, the Keltzer Sick Benefit Society, the Lagover Mutual Benefit Society, the Lubliner Society, the Ostrovtzer Independent Mutual Benefit Society, the Pride of Israel Sick Benefit Society, the Radomer Mutual Benefit Society, the Stashiver Young Men's Mutual Benefit Society, and the Warshaver Lodzer and Mutual Benefit Society. The images include members at banquets, dinners and meetings, members partaking in fundraising campaigns, and group photographs of the officers and ladies' auxiliaries.

This was a very active committee consisting of representatives from the fraternal orders, sick benefit societies and landsmanshaften. An early chairman was Alfred Green. In 1947, it was Carl Herlick, K.C. The committee dealt - or tried to deal - among other issues, with the relationship of the societies and the medical profession. After the expulsion of the United Jewish Peoples Order in 1950, it seemed to peter out. The Societies Division held annual social events - one year at the Prince George Hotel.

Accession consists of photographs and textual records documenting the Lagover Mutual Benefit Society. The bulk of the photographs are photocopies of composite and group images of members; however, there is one original composite photograph of members (1931) and a copy photograph of the Lagov market. Also included is a constitution for the society (1938), copies of articles written by members which outline their memories of Lagov, and a brief meeting report (1997). Records are in English and Yiddish.

Custodial History

Records were in the possession of Sid' Orfus's brother-in-law. They came into Sid's possession after his brother-in-law passed away.

Rev. J. K. Goldbloom was a respected Zionist from the United Kingdom, who was sent to Canada for protection during the Second World War.

Scope and Content

This item is a copy print and corresponding negative of a group of people at Camp Hagshama on Otty Lake near Perth, Ontario. The camp was a Zionist youth camp run by Young Judaea. Pictured left to right are:

Chaim Kirshenbaum (later Dr. Hyman Kirshenbaum, the son of Rabbi David Kirshenbaum), Anne Brown, Max Bookman (from Ottawa), Mrs. J. K. Goldbloom (from England), Nathan Sheister (national president of Canadian Young Judaea), Rev. J. K. Goldbloom (Zionist from England), Martin Stoler, Harry Geffen (camp director and national executive director of Young Judaea). Hanging on the wall behind the group is a sign which reads: welcome delegates, in both Yiddish and English.

Accession consists of a leather bound cemetery ledger presented to the Board of Directors by Mr. & Mrs. S. Ulster. The ledger is referred to as the "Golden Book". The names of the Board of Directors are handwritten in Hebrew. Listed on the following pages are the names of the deceased, some including the date and cemetery name. Also included are 7 handwritten sheets of paper from 1940-1966, of individuals names, dates and cemetery name.

Administrative History

The Chenstochover Aid Society, incorporated December 1914, was established as a mutual benefit society which included sick benefits and burial. The two burial locations for the CAS were Dawes Road Cemetery and Bathurst Lawn Cemetery.

Administrative History

The University of Toronto Menorah Society (1917) was founded on 11 October 1917, as a constituent of the Intercollegial Menorah Society formed at Harvard in 1906. Its purpose, as stated in the Torontonenensis Yearbook of 1918, was “to study Jewish history and culture and modern Jewish life and thought.” The Menorah Society was non-sectarian and open to members of the university of any faith. During its tenure the Menorah Society published the Menorah Journal and the Menorah Mentor magazine. Bi-weekly meetings held at the University YMCA featured lectures by prominent speakers, or student forums, and had an average attendance of two hundred people. The Menorah Society organized study circles, debates, annual plays, a “smoker” (party for men only), teas, and dances. It also maintained a Jewish Collection at the University Library. As Greek-letter fraternities proliferated at the University in the 1920s, the popularity of the Menorah Society waned, and it dissolved in 1931. The University of Toronto Menorah Society grew out of a series of organizations for Jewish students at U of T in the early twentieth century, a Toronto Hebrew Students’ association and a Yiddish club. Both these organizations and the Menorah Society were Predecessors of Hillel.

Accession consists of a bound book of the Pride of Israel Sick Benefit Society constitution and by-laws from 1946.

Administrative History

The Pride of Israel Sick Benefit Society was founded in 1905 on Chestnut St. for the purpose of providing aid to its members requiring medical support. Each member was required to pay dues to the society and in return was entitled to the following services: doctor's attendance, special medical aid, hostpital care, incurable benefits, a burial plot, funeral arrangements and funeral benefits and sick benefit payments.

As the society grew, the benefit society formed an "Actzia" or credit society for granting loans and in the 1940s established a synagogue on Spadina Ave. so that its members could pray together. It later moved to Wilson Ave. and in 1969 a building was erected at its current location on Bathurst St., south of Steeles.
